Buying a New Camera...Done Deal !

Postby Greg mgm » Fri Oct 31, 2008 9:32 pm

Thinking about a new camera for my off road car- http://www.raceoptics.com/evolution.php
The format is AVI (Divx4.5/5.0) MPEG4 and records on SD cards.

Is this format the dreaded Divx I need to avoid with PE3? Not sure if Divx4.5/ 5.0 is the same as when I tried it many months ago, which crashed my computer. What a mess that was!

This particular camera would be perfect for a dirty/ dusty environment though...

PE7 looks like it can handle AVI MPEG4 but doesn't mention Divx.

Sorry, I'm not up on all the formats, thus the question.

I think that camcorder and Premiere Elements are definitely going to be an unhappy marriage, Greg.

There may be software out there that can edit those files, but it certainly isn't Premiere Elements 7.

OK, that's what I was afraid of! Glad I asked though.

I have several options in cameras, so I'll look at something else. Like maybe a tape based camera inside the car with a remote Sony lipstick camera for outside.

Thanks for the speedy reply!

Hey George, do you have that camera? Looks very good, and it has the AV in. Hmmm. A few clicks and it could be MINE =D>

A big brown delivery truck stopped by the other day and left this for me-

I get all giddy when they stop by :bounce: :bounce:
Inside the box is the camera system I decided on-

Image

This system is made by Chasecam. The main unit is a solid state recorder that records to CF cards-

Image

It's ruggedly built and made for harsh environments. The recorder accepts 4 AA batteries, but I plan
to run off my car's 12 volt power. The great thing is, the format is MPEG 2 and PE3 gets along fine with the video files.

The camera is a Sony lipstick which is water and dust proof and can be mounted outside the car-

Image

I ordered a Manfrotto clamp and camera platform for the lipstick camera that will allow me to mount it in almost
unlimited positions outside the car. I have a tube rear bumper as well as a roof rack that it can attach to, and I'll also
clamp the camera to a hand held 5' length of pvc pipe so I can reach out and shoot other cars while in motion. I'll have a driver for my next off road video shoot so I'll be able to concentrate on shooting.

The recorder cords and accessories will be in my camera bag secured behind the drivers seat.
Controlling the recorder is done with a LANC remote, which mounts to the dash. It has an led which tells you what the recording status is; Green for standby...red for recording...flashing green or red indicates low battery or full CF card.

Image

I bought an optional 5" LCD monitor which will also be dash mounted. (bottom left of the 2nd photo)
Next week I'll be installing several power outlets in my car as well as auxiliary side and rear lighting....so I have a bunch of work to get it up and running.
I'll post a video by the end of next week....if all goes well !

It definitely looks like a cool set-up, Greg!

Looking forward to seeing your results.
