Canon HV30 or other

Postby John Callahan » Thu Oct 30, 2008 1:37 pm

Hello,

Asking for suggestions or model recommendations.

I'm buying a new camcorder soon when Canon first came out with the HV30 I tried it out knowing the mini tapes work well with editing in PE4. With newer models and changing technology and the future of HD.

Thanks
John

For price, features, quality, ease of use, there still isnt' a better choice IMO.
Now if you are willing to spend more money......
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

My next choice would be a Canon XH A1.
There are some great Sony cameras as well, Camcorderinfo.com is a great place to look.

Hello,

My HV30 I got from Best Buy a while back is being replaced ( long story ). My best luck so far with editing is with the HV30 mini tapes . Best buy currently does not have in stock any HV30 and are telling me that they are being faded out or at least from them. I may still be able to get one from them if I press the issue. I did not yet!

With PE7 editing should I still stay with the mini tapes ? or Does Hard drives, flash memory ,memory stick ect work the same in PE7? I know for a fact my sony minidvd camcorder and mpegs we nothing but a pain.

My bottom line is I have a $900 credit to use at Best Buy . I can spend whatever.

That's too bad, John. I haven't heard that the hv30 is being discontinued. It's still listed on Best Buy's online site. Personally, I'd try to get them to locate an HV30 from the warehouse or another store location. I also checked circuit city and all the stores seemed to have them in stock.

The other camcorders you mentioned use avchd which PE7 can process but the computer resources required are much higher. How's your computer? They also have a smaller sensor than the HV30.

The HG21 and HDR-SR12 are hard drive camcorders which I personally don't care for because of the potential for shock damage to the hard drive. Maybe I'm overly cautious, but I've known people that had problems. The HF10 and HF11 use flash memory which is fine and the smaller size of the camcorder is convenient. Of the two, I'd go with the HF11.

I really haven't been on top of the different makes and models since I'm not in the market for a camcorder right now. Maybe someone more up to date and knowledgeable than I am can comment.

While I've not been able to find any 'official' confirmation of the HV30 being discontinued, big box retailers in the Toronto area still show it on their websites at between $749 and $949.

One retailer in particular, Future Shop (our equivalent to Circuit City but solvent), who still show it on their site at $949 had unadvertised specials last week at a number of their stores at $499 and $599.

At $499, or roughly the equivalent of $420 U.S. at the present rate, I couldn't resist!

If Canon is indeed planning on announcing a Mini DV based replacement, one feature I'm betting they'll change is the card slot from mini SD to regular SD, since it appears mini SD has all but disappeared, at least in this market anyway, and one must go with a micro SD and an adapter.

$765 on sale now at Best Buy.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... oc=KW-1274

They only show it as the Canon Vixia, not HV30 in the product name maybe that is why you couldn't find it.
