Flash Media Storage

Postby Doty » Thu Aug 14, 2008 5:58 pm

I am considering purchasing a flash media camcorder and I will have to purchase a SanDisk type flash media storage device.

Most of my footage would be short clips, well under 30 minuets. The camera settings would be set to the highest considering I can always down convert later. Looking at the Canon HF100 instruction manual online an 8GB card will record 1 hour at the highest setting (FXP - 17Mbps 1920 X 1080)

Looking up the price quickly at B&H showed a Kingston 8GB SDHC Class 6 for $28.50 (sounds really good) OR the 16GB model for $86.50. It seems if I am shooting shorter clips having multiple cards would be the way to go.

Any recommendations on weather it would be better to have multiple 8GB cards or one 16GB card?
Is it OK to go with another company other than SanDisk, Kingston for example?

Any thoughts!

I'm considering a Flash memory camera as my next purchase as well. One thing you should know if you don't already is that in order to edit your footage in PE you'll have to get a third party converter before being able to work with it.

Here's some good info from Steve and Paul on the subject.

B&H is a great place to buy cameras, but for SDHC cards Newegg.com has much better selection and prices, and their customer reviews are very helpful in selecting a good quality card. Their cost for a 16GB card is roughly double that of an 8GB card so the price per GB is about the same. That being said, cards can and do fail, so 2 8GB cards are safer and more reliable than 1 16GB card. You'll definitely want to stay with a Class 6 card, though.

Again thanks!!!

I am the same when it comes to stuff failing, it's not a matter of if, but when; which is usually at the worst time.

Sometimes I just feel guilty that I'm getting all this great knowledge for free. If they had an olympic event on comsumer videography you would all have the gold!
