Need a deck that will read 8mm video tape

Postby JackGombola » Thu May 15, 2008 5:24 pm

Hello All: I've inherited a broken Sony Handycam model CCD-F40 and 33 8mm video tapes. I would like to investigate ways to capture the images from these tapes and bring them into Premiere Elements. The camera doesn't work well enough to eject the tape it still holds. My sense is that it needs a hardware refresh: belts, lube and etc. Before I invest in repairing this camera, have any of you worked with 8mm video from this era? Any advice on recovering data from these tapes? Are used 8mm Handycams available on Ebay or elsewhere before I investigate repairing this one?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Here is one option Jack
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DCRTRV460-Di ... B0001BW0U6

Plays 8mm Hi8 and digital 8 tapes :)
And it connects via Firewire for easy capture in Premiere Elements or other video editing software.

From Amazon:

5 used & new available from $379.00

I'm in the same boat you are, Jack. I have a DCR-TRV460 that just died on me with several tapes still to capture. What kills me is that I paid only $250 for it brand new at Best Buy 5 years ago. I suggest checking local pawn shops for a cheap one, or see if one of your local videographers has one they would rent to you.

Chuck: Thanks for the speedy reply and the reference to the TRV460.

Jack: I appreciate your message as well. I did see those available on Amazon but wouldn't have thought about a pawn shop. I think I'll try that route and try my local pawn brokers.

Thanks to you both,
