Buying a new video camera

Buying a new video cameraMy fantastic Sony Handicam HDR-HC7E has finally died with an electrical problem which will cost a small fortune to repair over here. I have had it for many years and it has worked very hard. I am looking for an equivalent camera which will play all the HD tapes I already have and bring me up to date. I am informed that if I get the electrical problem sorted out I may well get another problem with the same old camera! I would be grateful for any advice on a new handicam and do they still sell cameras which use tapes? I have searched the www and am overwhelmed with Sony cameras but none like my old one. I bought a cheaper Sony £175 recently and am bitterly disappointed with the results and am prepared to pay more for a really good handicam. I am going on safari to Africa soon and MUST have a decent camcorder!
Re: Buying a new video cameraYou might find a used one on eBay.
I had my HDR-HC9 repaired about a year ago to the tune of about $300.00 because I had so many accessories and tapes for it. I still use it.
Re: Buying a new video cameraI bought a Sony Digital 8 on eBay last year for $100.
Having a Digital 8 cam gives me access to pretty much any video I shot prior to 2009 (and I started shooting video on 8mm back in 1989, before going digital in 2003). I won't be using it to shoot any new material. For that I use my Canon AVCHD. But a functional, used one was a very good investment. BTW, my current go to camcorder, the Canon AVCHD, cost me all of $200 as a refurb on eBay. HP Envy with 2.9/4.4 ghz i7-10700 and 16 gig of RAM running Windows 11 Pro
Re: Buying a new video cameraD8's were sure short lived, if you ask me. That format came in at a weird time in the evolution of video formats. So few models that were released. They're the best ones to get if you have any variation of 8mm video tapes in your collection, though, because Digital8 was compatible with reg 8, Hi8, and of course D8. Great unit to own if you find yourself needing to convert video from tape to disk for people.
Dell Studio XPS 8100, Intel Core i7 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 64-Bit Win7. Camera gear: 2x Canon 550D's, 1x Canon EOS 6D body, Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 & 17-50mm f2.8, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 & 24-70mm f/2.8L, and two 420EX flashes.
Re: Buying a new video cameraI have kept my old D hi8 camera for that very reason. I have a bunch of video tape on that format and just in case I would like to download anything I have it handy. I have purchased a couple of refurb cameras and they have worked quite well.
