Looking for an underwater video camera.

Postby Peru » Sun Dec 30, 2012 6:23 pm

I've been considering getting an inexpensive underwater camera to film swimmers in an indoor pool. I don't want to spend any more than I have to, as this will probably be used to produce only one video for my daughter's last year on the high school swim team.

I don't want to risk using one of my DV cameras in a waterproof case.

Has anybody got any suggestions for a camera that will allow me to edit the files in Premiere Pro CS?

Have you considered a Hero3 camera? The White edition should be good enough and it comes with a waterproof housing. Records in h.264 or mp4 depending on the resolution. Should work fine in Premiere Pro.

You might also consider picking up a Flip Ultra HD 2nd generation and the waterproof case. I have used them underwater and they work fantastic. This only issue I faced was that because of the buoyancy underwater and the camera you need to brace against a wall or as I did I rubber-banded the camera and case to my monopod and held it under water.

The Flip is easy and does a really nice job. but only the 2nd gen cameras work. The 3rd gen are too thin.

I know there used to be a underwater outfit for a HV40 that looked pretty nice if you already have one of those.

I have the older version of the Kodak PlaySport which is waterproof up to 10 feet so need to mess around with cases. It is small and I generally carry it with me if I dont want to take my camcorder. My daughters have used it in the pool. With fast pans it has issues with rolling shutter... but all cameras like this do unfortunately. Generally I fix it with Mercalli image stabilization or with the stabilizer in Vegas. The videos work fine in Premiere Pro. Link to the new one below:
