Resolution of SMX-F50BP

Postby borgie » Wed Nov 14, 2012 5:20 pm

The following is a word for word resolution settings from the camcorder manual:
TV Super Fine: Record videos in 720x576(50i)
Resolution at super-fine image quality.

TV Fine: Record videos in 720x576(50i)
Resolution at fine image quality.

TV Normal: Record videos in 720x576(50i)
Resolution at normal image quality.
The underlined headings is what is offered for selection from a menu.
The manual also states elsewhere that the finer the quality the more storage is consumed. To me this implies that Super Fine will have more pixels per frame than Fine. But how can this be if each setting is 720 pixels by 576 pixels per frame at a frame rate of 50 fps interlaced!!!!!
Either this is all wrong or I am missing something very fundamental in video resolution, in which case I would appreciate if someone sets me straight, please.
Thank you.

It has to do with compression, not pixels. The frame dimensions are the same in each setting. Of the three settings, TV Normal has the most compression and the least storage consumed. TV Super Fine has the least compression and the most storage consumed. Because the compression method used is lossy, you will lose some of the finer detail. The higher the compression, the more detail lost. TV Super Fine will retain the most detail while TV Normal will retain the least.
