AVI codecs

Postby AVITRY » Tue Mar 01, 2011 10:31 am

Hi all. While my question seems specific to PE3, I think it's really more a codec question, so I'll post it here.

My daughter has an inexpensive digital camera Nikon L22 that saves movies in AVI format. I believe they are motion jpegs. Anyway, I wanted to do some editing for her, so I opened them in Windows Movie Maker, put them on the timeline and saved them as dv-avi files so they would work better with PE3.

My question is, if they are dv-avi files now, why is there a red line over them on the timeline?

Also, when I brought one clip at a time from her camera into Windows Movie Maker, they showed up as a few separate clips that I had to highlight all together and bring onto the timeline of Windows Movie Maker in order to have all the clips content played. It wasn't like she pressed the play / pause button on her camera, it was a continuous video she shot.

thanks,
joe

I believe MovieMaker creates type 1 DV-AVI and Premiere Elements natively works with type 2 DV-AVI. The difference lies in how the audio is managed. The free DVDate can convert from type 1 to type 2, it wont impact video quality.

I'm using the DVdate program to change our motion jpegs to dv-avi files. Hitting the F10 key I found some options such as PAL or NTSC and also the audio bit rate. Should I leave the audio at 44k or change it to 48k? Thanks

44.1K is the standard sampling rate for CDs, 48K is the standard sampling rate for video and DVDs.
