Need to Transfer Old Audio Tapes to Digital.
What type of Cable would Work Best.
Phono Cable to Audio in or USB Cable in ?
Any Difference.
What software in needed ?

What format are the tapes, BTW? Reel to reel? Cassette? 8 track?

It makes a difference. I found a terrific device for digitizing cassette tapes, for instance.

YES Old cassettes.
Can I just Plug a cable from the Player into Audio in Plug.
What software to You Recommend ?

You can record audio plugged into your computer with the excellent free program Audacity.

Though my cassette digitizer plugs into a USB port and it's worth every penny I invested in it.
