Spinning to Dry DVDs

Postby Bobby » Wed Mar 18, 2009 6:49 pm

The DVDs I print on my Epson R220 do come out dry when using matte disks. Those of you who hang around here know that my results for the TY Watershield are not quite so good - they come out "dry" but feel a bit waxy.

Anyhow, the thought occurred to me that perhaps by putting the newly printed DVD in a drive and playing it (i.e. spinning it for an hour) would be a good way to dry them instead of my current technique, which is to let them sit for 24 hours.

Any thoughts?

Wouldn't there be a risk of slinging off some of the "wet" ink onto the internals of the drive?

I've played some of my DVDs imediately after printing them on my Epson R220, and have not had any issues with the wet ink slinging off.

It may not be a bad idea. But Ido not know how long it would take to dry.

How about drying them in a tumble dryer, you could put a whole batch in and dry them all at once...

Not meaning to be flip Bobby, but it seems like a waste of an hour of DVD drive life. Wouldn't you get the same results or better by setting up one of those little $6.95 table top fans to blow air across the disc?

Hey! That's an insult where I come from. :-D I'm only practical when it comes to other people. When it comes to my own impracticality, the sky's the limit! image094

It's probably that i live in the High Sonoran Desert, but we seldom have an issue with anything drying. Matter of fact, it is usually just the opposite - keeping anything moist for more than a moment.

When I lived in New Orleans, I could not understand what all the fuss was about static electricity and dust. We had neither - then I moved to Colorado and had plenty of both. Now, in AZ, the dust capital of the globe, I really see what people were talking about.

I like the fan idea.

Spinning the disc for an hour may not work due to the air being thrown away from the disc instead of on it. There is also a vacuum created causing the moisture to "stick" to the disc instead of evaporating quickly from it. The physics involved is too complicated so I won't go into it, but what it all means is that in the end it could take longer to dry.

I always put my printed DVDs in to an air tight chamber for at least 6 hours prior to testing, they don't dry faster but it sounds really good when I tell people that ::C

I have one which I've kept sealed in a mayonnaise jar outside Funk & Wagnalls' porch since noon today. I'll let you know how it turns out. image094

OK - I'll bite - the only Funk & Wagnalls reference I know of is to an old encyclopedia. Are they a B&B now?

Haha...I know you're "seasoned" enough to have lived that era Bobby. Try this. The answer is in the first 45 seconds, but I found myself listening on. It's classic Carson.

Oh, got it. Never watched - too late for a working guy like me.

BTW, do you know the secret? That the "answer" for each was in the previous envelope - he only had to be told the first one.
