DVD Burn Software

Postby Peter » Wed Nov 05, 2008 8:12 am

Unfortuantely, my Sonic/Roxio RecordNow program is now corrupted and I no longer have the disc that came with the PC. What do you guys suggest for an inexpensive or even free DVD/CD burning program? I liked the simplicity of RecordNow, that I could first burn DVD files to a folder and then burn through RecordNow and that I could control my burn speed. Thanks!

Hi Peter,
Version 6.5 is available at download.com for $30, I think RecordNow is worth that :)

Chuck
As always, thanks for the quick response. I figured I would float the balloon and see what else is out there. I agree $30 is well worth it. If V6.5 does the job for $30 I'll download it today. Thanks for pointing me to the site.

You can maybe find a copy on eBay or somewhere else a little cheaper.
I don't know what version you had, I have version 7, version 8 is available also.

Preferably I would rather own the disc than just the download and I agree I could probably save a few $$ through ebay. However, my son's school project is due Friday and even though he completed and burned the video ahead of schedule (can you see my smile as a parent? :-D ) he has to have it on a disc for Friday.

You can write the installation file to a CD after you download it, then you will always have a copy.
I also put the key or serial number into text document and put that on the disc as well :)

Hi Chuck,

Do you mean one can copy the downloaded EXE file from one's desktop to a CD?

A lot of people like IMGBURN (http://www.imgburn.com/) which is free. You can burn a dvd directly from the video_ts folder on your drive and control the write speed.

Here's a guide for how to write a standard single layer dvd: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=4632

There's also a guide for burning dual layer discs which shows you how to control where the layer break occurs. Here's the link to the guides section of the site: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showforum=4

Sure you can, I do that with all of my downloaded software. Need to have a backup of everything just in case.

Bob's idea is a great one, ImgBurn is used by many here and at the Adobe forum so lots of support.
I might have to give that a try myself one of these days.

I use Imgburn for almost all of my burning.

The only drawback is that it doesn't have a "copy" function-- you have to build an image and then burn the image.
So, if you need to copy a disc, other software like Record Now is more convenient.

I didnt' know that ImgBurn only burned the DVD files, thought it did anything including data and music cds.
Going to have to stick with RecordNow for all of that stuff :)

One nice feature of ImgBurn is that one can burn to multiple DVD burners. Just open another instance of it and point it to the other burner. It also has one of the better burn speed settings, that I have seen. Too many burning apps. do a query of the media and the burner and try to pick some happy medium. ImgBurn still allows really slow burns for better compatibility with more set-top players.

Plus, as has been stated, it's free!

Sorry you got that impression. ImgBurn isn't restricted to DVDs. You can burn CD, DVD, HDV, Blu-Ray, even bootable discs.

To copy CDs and DVDs using ImgBurn, you need to first create amn image on your hard drive, then burn that image to CD or DVD.
I use ImgBurn all the time. It has always worked without issue for me.
