Manipulating motion backgrounds

Postby Jayell » Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:49 pm

I'm using the motion background tv0476. It's got several sports balls rotating. I'm only interested in the golf .. but when I cut that portion out, it's about half the length I need .. but when I put two golf clips back-to-back, the video jumps. I can time stretch it, but that makes it a little slow for my purpose. I'm trying to make sure there isn't a way to repeat the clips back-to-back without a jump in the video before I spend a lot of time trying to make it usable. I'm using PE2 and have no other software to manipulate it.

I have just gotten back to video editing after a long break .. and I believe I've forgotten almost everything I knew :pull:

Yes, I think cutting the clip as you have is going to mean there's no automatic solution.

I wonder if applying a long dissolve between the clips will help hide the shift.

Hi Jayell,

Steve is right about adding the cross dissolve being a possible solution.
There is also a tutorial on creating looping backgrounds that might help
http://muvipix.com/products.php?subcat_id=6
"An Easy Way To Make Any Background Loop Seamlessly"

Other than that, if you can tell me what page the background is on maybe I can take a look at it.

Thanks for the quick reply .. as always, guys!

Steve, it seems a long dissolve would sort of defeat the purpose of needing a longer clip, as I have other things going on on top of it .. but I'll look at it to see what happens.

Chuck, I'll take a look at the tutorial when I get a minute .. thanks. The background I'm using is on the first page of SD motion/SPORTS.. 2nd row .. middle item. I actually need it several seconds longer, so maybe I'll look for another option.

Using the method in the tutorial you can copy the clip onto the timeline as many times as you need. Then you should be able to make them all fit together without any jumps.

I'll take a look at it, maybe I can do something that will help.

After just a quick look at the background I can see that it will be difficult to make this work because there isn't a complete rotation.

One thing that sort of worked was to add the clip twice, back to back on the same track, and apply the Time Stretch - Reverse to the second clip. It is seamless and the ball spins in one direction and then goes in reverse.
The whole section of just the golf ball is only a little over 2 seconds long but timestretching to 50% still looked really good.
That way you could get at least a 8 second clip using the reverse on the second clip.

And if you don't mind the ball reversing directions then you can continue to add clips, one without reverse, one with reverse, one without reverse, one with reverse, as long as you want to.

It worked! it worked! :yh: .. although I'm not understanding how reversing the direction makes it work so seemingly smooth. But I guess it doesn't matter. Thanks again, Chuck. That solution would never have occurred to me. I'd probably have been bald by now, having been left to solve this on my own.
