Adjusting Soundtrack Levels

Postby Peter » Mon Mar 09, 2009 1:34 pm

Let me see if I can articulate this question without confusing everybody.

1) I have multiple music clips on my master project soundtrack track. Some are louder than others and I would like to make each of the music clips output at the same level on the soundtrack without affecting any of my other four audio tracks. How do I do that? Is that "normalizing?"

2) I have three projects that will be merged into the above-referenced master. Those project have more than one music clip on each of their respective soundtrack lines as well as audio tracks. When I do a project merge, I typically export the project to avi and then insert the avi into the master project. The issue I forsee is that the exported avi's now only have one "combined" audio track. If I adjust the audio to match the soundtrack of the master, I will also be affecting what once was the individual audio tracks. How do I end up with a consistent soundtrack from all merged projects yet keep my individual audio tracks intact?

Thanks, Peter

Hi Peter,
Normalizing would be what you need however the audio needs to be one single clip.
The only other way would be to make adjustments to each clip using the audio meters along with your own eyes and ears.

You can export the project Audio Only and then bring that back into your project, using it to replace the existing audio.
Then you would apply the Normalize Audio Effect. I tend to prefer Audacity's Normalize effect more so I will generally export the audio from Premiere Elements, import into Audacity and Normalize, then export and finally import back into Premiere Elements and replace the existing audio with the one single clip.

Hope that helps :)

If I export audio only, can I export only the soundtrack and not the other audio tracks?

I don't think there is a way to just export one track.

Do a 'Save As' delete everything except for the audio you want to Normalize, then export from the new project.
I almost always have two or three Save As' projects whenever I am editing. Audio exports, track mattes, lots of reasons.
In Premiere Pro you simply have to open a new sequence, or a nested Sequence, in the same project, kind of like a 'sub project' works much easier.
