Stylus Tough TG-Tracker

Enter the $379 Stylus Tough TG-Tracker. It’s got your basic specs for a 2016 action cam – 4K 30fps, Wi-Fi, ultra wide-angle lens. But the camera also claims to outdo its competitors in a few key areas (other than name length): image stabilization, ruggedness, and features. The company’s internal 5-axis image stabilization is freakishly good. The TG-Tracker is packing the same technology inside.

Then there’s the ‘Tough’ aspects it’s named for. Olympus says the camera is extremely durable without any special housing and is guaranteed to be:

Waterproof to 100 feet
Freezeproof to 14°F (-10°C)
Dustproof
Shockproof from 7 feet
Crushproof up to 220 pounds

Pretty incredible specs. I wonder how it really performs.

From what I am seeing it looks like the packaging of the camera is the selling point. The image stabilization seems like a much needed improvement and the addition of a video light. From a spec perspective most of the action cameras seem to be using the same Ambarella chip set and the lens' all seem pretty comparable.

Although, it looks like Qualcomm is making some inroads as a chip maker because you can stream video directly from the device instead of having to go through a Wifi paired device. I am not sure what the difference in picture quality is between Qualcomm and Ambarella.

Without some kind of major revision I think that the current action camera market is maxed out at what they can do for the size. I think that when the New GoPro 5 drops it will be a good indicator of if the cameras are innovating or just adding features. The rumor I have seen is that GoPro is switching to Qualcomm and keeping the square cube design. But we will see when we see.
