It sounds like you are using Coppermine for the video gallery. If so, you can use an animated .GIF as the thumbnail for your movies. For an example, take a look HERE.

Yeah, it's a cat, not because I have a fondness for cats (they're OK), but I just like the concept of that avatar - it's usually a double-take.

I think what threw me was that black spot. It made it look like a panda bear.

Re: Create Video Thumbnails for your Gallery Items

Postby William Tranter » Thu Feb 07, 2008 1:01 pm

I'm not sure If I've done everything correctly, because I've just uploaded a couple of thumbnails for two of my videos, but of course when I uploaded the videos I hadn't created the thumbnails! I can see the thumbs on the 'Viewed' directory, but not on the main 'Holiday videos, titles, etc' directory. I'm obviously not doing something right, but what is it?
Any help much appreciated,
Bill

Hi Bill,

You're adding 'jpg' to the filename. The filename of the thumbnail should be exactly the same as the filename of the video with the prefix 'thumb_'. Make sure you also use EXACT case.

Rename your thumbnails from:
thumb_Trip_to_Falmouth_jpg.JPG
thumb_Scorcher_title_jpg.JPG

To:
thumb_Trip_to_Falmouth.jpg
thumb_Scorcher_title.jpg

And you should be all set.

-Ron

Thanks, Ron. I added a thumbnail for the Portloe video, and it works fine, but the other two thumbs for my other videos just _won't_ work! I've tried four times now, taking very great care that the title of each thumbnail is EXACTLY as the videos they relate to has exactly the same name, but with 'thumb_xxxx" (where xxxx is the video name) as the thumbnail name. Perhaps it is because when I sent up the videos, I made each video title meaningful, so I have (ignore the quote marks) "Trip_to_Falmouth", and "Scorcher_title", so each title has a Shift/hyphen in it. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, despite following your very clear instructions to the letter!
If they just won't work, forget them - I will delete both the videos and the thumbnails, though I'm a little reluctant to do so because so many members of your wonderful website like to see them. THe trouble is, I had to re-load the videos into my computer, then output them at the screen size suitable for uploading to my Gallery page, and after they were uploaded successfully I deleted the files - I very seldom keep stuff on the computer in case something goes 'belly-up'!
All the best,
Bill

Hi Bill, when you modified your files, you did not change the case of the extension (upper case JPG). I went ahead and modified the files again and changed the extensions to lower case (jpg). The files are represented by the thumbnails now. I think you were trying too hard :) Try not to make it so difficult. Make the thumbnail EXACTLY the filename with the prefix 'thumb_'. Hope this helps!

-Ron

Hi,

Followed your instructions and loaded my first video (snakes.mov) and then a few minutes later the thumb_snakes.jpg. I put it in an Album that is private (Me only - My Thumbnails), but was surprised to see the thumbnail thumb_snakes.jpg appear on the Last Additions / Last Uploads. Is this correct, or should the thumbnail be blocked from people seeing it?

I was happy how it automatically attached itself to my snakes.mov with no trouble.

I am a new user, trying to work out how to load things and work with muvipix.

Regards,

Robyn :)
