Creating Borders by Rezizing - PSE 2020

Postby Ernie UK » Tue May 11, 2021 5:30 pm

::wav:: Hi,
I am trying to create a border around a portrait photo and enter some text in the lower border on A4 paper.
The border widths I would like are top - 25mm; bottom - 45mm; both sides - 20mm. I appreciate that it may not be possible to produce borders of these exact sizes but I need to get as near as possible to them. After all necessary resizing I would like to enter some text in the lower border.
I have attempted to do this wit the advice Steve has sent me but have not achieved the exact result. Similarly I can't seem to be able to enter text in the bottom border.
Could anyone give me instructions on how I can do all of this?
Sincerely,
Ernie

What is the current size of your photo? Are you willing to crop off some of the top and/or bottom so it will fit the dimensions you want?

There will be a variety of ways to achieve the result that you want. This is how I would do it in Photoshop. (I do not have Photoshop Elements). I hope that the description makes sense and that it is the same (similar?) process in PE.

1. Create a new, white background (File>New) with dimensions of 297mm tall by 210mm wide (A4 size). Make sure that you have selected white as the background colour.

2. Open the photo that you want to use. Press CTRL+J to create a new layer (preserves the original image).

3. Use the crop tool and, in the Crop settings at the top of the PE screen, set the crop dimensions to ‘Unconstrained’, 227mm by 170mm. Then crop the image.

4. At the top of the PE workspace click on the photo tab and drag it down a short way. You should now be able to move your cursor to the Layers panel (normally bottom left of workspace) and select the photo image layer. Select it and drag it onto thewhite backgound image that should be visible in the main PE workspace.

5. Adjust the position of the photo relative to the white background. Once you have the image in the correct position save the result (just in case you want to go back and change something).

6. Create a text layer and add text to the lower part of the image.

HTH.

I might add that, if you plan to print out your photo, you do need to consider resolution -- among the reasons I asked about the size of the photo you began with. (It's hard for us to get specific without specifics.)

Likewise, when you create the white canvas, as John describes, you'll not only need to ensure that the canvas is the A4 size but you'll need to ensure your canvas and picture are at least 60 pixels/centimeter if you want a good-looking print.

Have tried the method out but doesn't work completely. Photoshop 2020 seems only to allow top and bottom borders and left and right borders to be the same size as each other. I did manage to get it different top and bottom borders but I had the choice of centering the photo, which meant the top and bottom borders were the same size, or moving the photo by the hand tool which meant the photo was not accurately place on the canvas.

If I have understood your comment it seems that you have tried to set the size of the borders. There should be no need to do that.

If you have created the A4 sized background and have cropped the image to the sizes that I suggested then it should be a simple matter of manually inserting and positioning the correctly sized image on top of A4 white background. Have I missed something? :(
