Scratch Disks Full

Postby bgsnmky » Sun Dec 16, 2007 12:48 am

I am converting files in PS5 and am getting this message:
Scratch Disks Full

what does it mean, and can I change it or delete some files?

Probably your preview render files have built up over time (13GB per hour of video) and filled up your hard drive. Go to Timeline>Delete Render Files to clear them.

EDIT: SORRY, THOUGHT YOU WERE REFERING TO PE NOT PS5

Oh yes, Photoshop and Photoshop Elements use huge chunks of scratch disk space! Not as much as video, but they definitely create a lot of temp files.

That's why I urge people to do some basic clean-up on a regular basis. Here's my regular routine. I do it while I'm reading the Saturday newspaper every week.

In the Photoshop Elements Editor workspace Preferences there is a specification for Scratch Disks where you specify the volumes to be used. The default is the Startup drive, so if you have more space available on a different drive, it is worthwhile to set this specification. I have never seen documentation on exactly how this scratch space is used: I believe that it is used during complex editing but am not sure about Process Multiple Files.

If instead of using the Process Multiple Files in the Editor to resize your photos, you are using the File > Export in the Organizer, then I think the space needed will be obtained using the TEMP variable in Windows, which also probably points to your startup/system disk. So cleaning Temporary Files (as Steve referenced) will be critical. Also setting the PSE Editor scratch disks to a different disk may indirectly help by making more space available on the system disk.

Barb, that is how I got mine to work. I found that in the article that I posted. Not sure if you read that. i agree that there wasn't a lot out there and not clear cut. But this did fix my issue for right now anyway.

No I had not followed the link previously - I did just now.

I am curious to confirm for future reference that you were using the Process Multiple Files of the PSE Editor to reduce the pixel resolution of your photos. Thanks.
