How-To Install Actions in to PSE6

Postby Robert Barnett » Thu Oct 11, 2007 9:36 pm

Hello,

Per Chucks request I am sharing the action installation instructions with everyone. The file attached to this message includes a PDF file with generic instructions for installing actions in to PSE6 as well as Trail install with action so that you can test it out before trying it with someone else's actions. The trial action I created turns a day photo in to a night photo. Everything you need is included in the .zip file attached to this message. I tried to make the instructions as clear as I could. However, I do not know why a lot of this works. I do know that it does get the actions in to PSE6.

Please keep in mind that not all Photoshop actions will work with PSE6. Adobe over the last few versions of PSE have removed more and more of the hidden things from PSE. For example in the early versions of PSE it was basically the full Photoshop engine with an adjusted user interface. Basically all of Photoshops features were there they just removed the user access controls. This had the interesting ability of allowing actions to access things that the user otherwise wouldn't have been able to access. However, more later versions of Elements this has become less and less possible. For example PSE6 will not let an action take a photo in to the LAB color space. So please make sure that any actions you wish to install in to PSE6 only access features that are in PSE6 other wise the actions will attempt to play but will either cause errors or will result in odd results.

Thanks for this, Robert!

I've been using an ancient version of Photoshop (5.5) because I didn't realize PSE did actions. Now that I have PSE6, maybe it's time to delve into that program a bit more.

Thanks for the zip.

Happy to help. Just remember that you need to full version of Photoshop to create and/or edit actions. Not all actions will playback in PSE. But, many should.

Robert, I just discovered your amazing hack and I'm very impressed!

As someone who uses Photoshop CS all day and then Photo Elements on evenings and weekends, I will definitely find a use for this!

Thank you very much.

Hello all,

As Robert pointed out not ALL actions will work in PSE but be aware,..

Google.

Actions and wake up to a whole new world.

Ahhhhhhhhhh.

Many folks are more than happy to SHARE actions and there are worlds full of them on the web.

Hi,

Haven't been able to find the Xml file folder just like Cindy had questioned over on the article pages. I'm using PSE6 as well and have put the files in the appropriate place all except the Xml file. I even tried using Copernic, a desktop search engine, and found some of the folders Adobe uses for Xml's. Just nothing that was described by the document.
Maybe the problem is I'm a pc geek and it's too simple for my complicated mind but, this is making my brain hurt. Has anyone come up with a work around for this?
My options under XP program files are-
Program Files/Adobe/Photoshop Elements 6.0/AMT
Program Files/Adobe/Photoshop Elements 6.0/shared_assests
Program Files/Adobe/Photoshop Elements 6.0/sonictext
Program Files/Adobe/Photoshop Elements 6.0/Required
Program Files/Adobe/Photoshop Elements 6.0/LMResources

My options under XP -
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe

= = = = = = = = = = update = = = = = = update = = == = = = = = = = = = update = = = = = = update = = =

Guess what I found!!

Here is the location as near as I could tell that you will need to put the *.Xml file

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\en_US\Photo Creations Metadata\photo effects

As to where you need to delete the mentioned database the file can be found here;

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\en_US

Boy, I sure wish there was a way to update the article that was posted in the section. Maybe I could go post this in that area as well?!?!

Sure hope this helps someone else and glad I could find it- looking forward to using some of this.

All the best :-5

Hi Jay,
Thanks for all of your hard work figuring this out, I hope it helps Cinde and others too.
If you could write up the necessary changes and send them to Ron he would be able to take care of it.
You can also post your findings in the comments section of the article. Hope that helps :)

Thanks for the words on this Chuck. I'll be happy to make the changes and send them to Rob/Ron. It'll be just a short while I think since I'm out of town for several days vacation- just a brief one.
