Vegas Movie Studio 9; Slide Length Issue

Postby Molon_Labe » Thu May 06, 2010 1:19 pm

I've got a question. I'm trying to make a slide show in Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0. The problem is, I'm operating at extremes. I took a trip to France and I have 1,545 pictures that I'm trying to condense into 141 seconds to match a song (Suite for Solo Cello No. 1 in G Major, BWV 1007: I. Prelude composed by Johann Sebastian Bach and performed by Yo-Yo Ma, if you're curious). That's 10.957 pictures per second or 0.183 seconds per picture. When I enter that value into "New still image length" in Options>Preferences>Editing and then add all of my pictures into the video track, the bar is 309 seconds long, not 140 seconds long. I think the problem might have to do with the value directly to the right of the number box that changes by itself. As far as I know, I have no control over it. Right now, it reads, "5 frames at 29.970 fps." Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Thanks, in advance!

Hi Molon,
Welcome to Muvipix :wcm:

I don't know much about Vegas, I'm sure one of the users will be along to help you shortly.

What I am wondering is why you would want to do this?
10 images per second is about a new image every 2 frames, no one will even see them as it will probably be one big blur.
Maybe I am not understanding what you are really trying to accomplish :-k
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

Thanks for the reply.
Basically, I took a LOT of pictures in a very short amount of time.
We were only there for 5 days, so that's a little over 300 pictures per day on average.
When I scrolled through the images one by one on my camera, I saw that they flowed together very nicely.
There are lots of areas where it even looks like choppy video or like time-lapse photography.
So, my idea was to use all the pictures that I took, unedited and everything for this short slide show.
Then I'd make a smaller gallery of the highlights, and an even smaller gallery of the touched up best-of-the-best.
Then I'd throw it all onto DVD and make copies for friends and family.

You can have only whole frames, no partial frames.

So in one second at 5 frames a second: 1 divided by 5 times 1545 equals 309 seconds. This is 0.2 seconds per frame.
If 6 frames a second: 1 divided by 6 times 1545 equals 257.5 seconds. This is 0.166666 seconds per frame.
If 4 frames a second: 1 divided by 4 times 1545 equals 386.25 seconds. This is 0.25 frames per second.

So your .183 seconds was rounded up to 0.2 seconds during calculations, it would seem.

If you enter .183, there are actually too many photos to fit in only 141 seconds. You can have 141 divided by 0.2 equals 705 photos, more or less.

If you enter .166, then you can have 141 divided by .166 equals 846 photos, more or less.

I'm not a Vegas user so I can't give precise info on how to do this but I should think that it will be possible to create the slideshow even if it is too long for your music. Then export that slideshow as a video file (.avi?) and re-import that file back onto a timeline. Now it should be easy to adjust the length of the video to fit your chosen soundtrack.

You could do that, John, but the duration of each photo will be a lot less than the intended length, not withstanding that the photos are flying by already. I'm too tired now for the calculator.

Seems like a bit of a flaw, haha. It already automatically rounds up or down when you enter values more specific than to 1/1000th of a second.

So is there any way around this? Like I said, all I'm trying to do is to fit 1545 pictures into 141 seconds.
It MUST be possible unless the software just doesn't allow me to alter fps or be specific enough with the values.
1545 pictures / 141 seconds = 10.9574468 pictures per second.
If there is just a way for me to add the pictures and set the frame rate to 10.9574468 (or 10.957) frames per second where each picture equals one frame, I'd be good to go.

The other way is trying to get the timing of each individual frame to be .0915 seconds long.
.0915 seconds x 1545 pictures = 141.3675 seconds

Thanks for the responses, guys. I'm going to give John's method a try and see what happens.

I imported the video file and added the track, but when I tried to condense the video file, all it did was chop the end off...I dunno, I might just be doing it wrong.

In Vegas Movie Studio Platinum you can only have projects that are NTSC 29.97 or PAL 25 frames per second.

Can't tell why your photos got cut off except maybe you had defined a loop region. If so you need to drag the second yellow marker to the end of your video, or just clear the checkmark next to "Render Loop Region Only" on the dialogbox where you prepare to render or create a movie.

Famous last words - but it is easy In PPrel and PPro. Though as you are using Vegas that isn't helpful to you I know. :???:

I don't use Vegas enough to remember how to do timestretch. There's something in Help under "Time Stretch" in the Index, but I can't get undersampling and playback rate to work right. You just can't grab the end of the clip on the timeline and drag it to the left in order to condense it. That's just trimming it.

I think I got it. You need to set the playback rate to something greater than 1,00.

Right-click on the clip and then select Properties from the popup menu.
Set the playback rate to 2,00 for example.
Now you can drag the end of the clip to the left until you see a brown vertical line. I think the brown vertical line signifies where you need to let go of the mouse button, otherwise you will start cutting off the end.

It's time for me to sign off.

Good call, man. That's what I needed to know!
Thanks for all the help, guys!
