Bonjour from Canada...

A place to introduce and tell a little about yourself.

Bonjour from Canada...

Postby Petey » Fri Jul 02, 2010 6:16 pm

Bonjour from Canada,

My name is Peter Forrest (often Pete, Petey, P.D. or Pierrot, Pierre) and I live in Ottawa, Canada. I'm actually from Sarnia, Ontario (on the border with Michigan) at the mouth of Lake Huron. I'm a librarian so I like books and modern computers. I like word games, languages, and joking around with mockery, but I'm also very serious. So serious, I took up the ukulele 3.5 years ago to conquer the world! LOL

I'm an amateur musician that had many years of guitar lessons, and too many years of classical piano. ;-) English is my first language but I'm very fluent in French and I get by in German since I did my BA in German Studies at university in Montreal. I also did my library degree in Montreal.

Back in 2000, my folksinger girlfriend was doing her first folk gig at the "Yellow Door" in Montreal. It's a small historic place in the basement of an old building. I thought I should buy a JVC camcorder and film her. I knew nothing about camcorders so I bought one. It was expensive! Anyway, I filmed her in black and white and the video bug bit big time!! I thought, this is great stuff! I learned how to make a VCD and all this technical video stuff was very foreign to me. I already knew about multi-track hard-disk recording audio with Cakewalk and having a steep learning curve with that. I had learned how to record music, voices, and burn CDs back in 1999. Though, this video stuff was baffling to me and really raised the bar technically! I remember bugs in the early Roxio VCD creator and I had to work them out with some help somewhere. I forget. I then bought VideoWave and started using that for some Halloween music I was working on. I spent two days working on a clip. Indeed, I had discovered a new hobby.

Then in 2006, I bought a Canon camcorder that had an external microphone jack. I planned on doing things but it fell by the wayside. Then in May 2009, I joined the German ukulele group (in Germany) and I noticed they all were doing YouTube videos of themselves playing, and always adding in something interesting in their videos. That was the ticket for me! I dusted off my Canon camcorder and started recording myself. I had already bought PE 4, and I think I first had PE 3 or PE 2 but I couldn't figure it out that well at the time. I went to PE 4 and it made sense. I then went to PE 7 and I was very happy. So, I've been using the video to record my uke playing. It's a fun hobby. I recently bought a Sony Handycam HD Full 1080. HDR-XR500

I had to join the Adobe PE group awhile back because I needed help. I'm used to different forums since 1998 and BBSes from the early 90s when I had an Atari ST computer.

I recently bought Magix because it has some effects I like (snow, rain, beer, etc). That guy RJ solved my Magix problem just the other day. Wow! I also ordered the two PE books from Steve and I'm sure I will get them in the next two weeks.

Here's a ukulele video I did of an original song about a pub in Nottingham where they have a cursed dusty galleon. If you dust it, you will die a week later. That's how the legend goes.

Welcome! :meet:

I'm in upper New York State, about an hour south of Montreal.

We used to visit and vacation across the border on US holidays because there was no "holiday traffic" there, but since the requirement of an expensive "enhanced driver's license" or a passport to cross the border we've not done so recently.

Where's Ed when you need him? Welcome to the group Peter! :wcm: I don't live in Canada, but I've spent some enjoyable fishing time at Rice Lake, not too terribly far from you. Gotta love that Toronto traffic.

Thanks everyone. It's Saturday! Woohoo!

@Peru: Unfortunately, we're all ready to be treated shabbily at any moment for this money pit called security. Reminds me of the old Easter Island metaphor. The people on the island used up all their resources and focused everything on building those useless statues and they wiped themselves out by doing that. I noticed the other day that according to Ottawa (my city) bylaws, one is not allowed to use a camera or video camera on a bus or transit train. Humph... maybe they should ban cell phones, etc... since everything seems to have a camera in it. I filmed a bit of my train trip at Christmas back to my home town of Sarnia and I'm surprised they didn't give me a hard time.

@Wheat King: I am lightening up! I switched from beer to cider! Hehe Glad to see someone else from Ottawa here who knows Ipperwash! hehe

@Dave: Are you talking about my retired coworker, Ed Popoff? How do you know him?

Cheers,

Petey

Hi Petey,
Dave is referring to one of our members, Ed Mann. He enjoys not only playing the Uke but building them as well :)

Welcome Petey to Muvipix! Enjoyed the uke video and you have a great voice. Check out ed's uke videos. Maybe the two of you will do a virtual duet. :)
