Hello from North Florida

A place to introduce and tell a little about yourself.

Hello from North Florida

Postby jag32266 » Thu Nov 22, 2007 10:42 am

Hi,

Thought I'd come on in here and see what was going on and introduce myself while I'm at it.
I spent many years in the film/video business mainly as a Gaffer (Chief lighting technician) but also some sound related work. Free lancing you had to do it all down here in Florida. Had to quit the business b/c the body was getting to old to do all the manual labor associated with it. Now I'm finishing out my working career in another trade. Maybe that's whats tweaked my yearning to learn/play with this editing stuff- lots of fun so far.

During my career I worked on approximately 47 motion pictures or made-for-TV movies as well as too numerous to count commercials/industrials/training films. Being a local yokel they tended to hire no-names as technicians on the major motion pictures tho so I was most often known as an "electrician" on the sets- again we did all the lighting and anything to do with electricity, generators etc.

Curious tho, in that my entire career I never had an interest in editing. And now it seems I can't get into it fast enough. I'm a bit of a geek and have been for at least the past decade. Started using PEv1 when it first came out but it played hell on my old pc. Recently was able to upgrade and so I built my new machine strictly as a audio/video play toy and really looking forward to learning PSv6/PEv4.

If I can be of any assistance (lighting/sound) I'd be happy to try. Really here to LEARN tho since I don't know it all, that's for sure!

All the best,
Jay

I'm another "retired" Hollywood guy (I worked in the film industry in LA for 10 years, mostly in the executive production offices but also on a few sets and sound stages). There's at least one more of us who frequents these forums.

But, like you, I never had as much fun working with the pros as I've had working for myself on my own personal projects.

Welcome aboard!

Welcome Jay, nice to have you here and nice to finally know what a "Gaffer" is when I see them in the credits. Where ever did they get a name like that, for that job?

Anyway good to have another one in the family...

Mark, if you'll check out my free Steve's Film School Intro article, you'll not only learn what a gaffer is but you'll also learn what a key grip and a best boy are! ;)
