2016 Christmas Light Display

Postby Chuck Engels » Tue Jan 10, 2017 12:12 pm

Here is one song from our 2016 Christmas Light Show. The entire show consists of 20 songs all synchronized to the lights (about 50,000 of them). I use Light O Rama software, light controllers and Cosmic Ribbons. Three 30 amp circuits to run everything, most of the lights are LED. Took about 6 weeks to get everything set up and lots of hours of programming the lights to the music. One weekend I get to have all of the kids and grandkids over to help set up, that is a lot of fun and everyone really enjoys being a part of it. Most of the help comes from my 15 year old son Josh, he works pretty hard lending me a hand.

Shot with: Canon HV40, GoPro Hero 4 Session, and my trusty Samsung Galaxy Note 2 :)

Entered a light show contest at Light O Rama, the fact that I can edit video and shot from different angles should help (I hope). I think most people will just shoot from one angle and not really do any editing.

That looks like an incredible amount of work went in to that. I was think about the scene in Christmas Vacation where the power plant red-lined when the lights were turned on :-D

Thanks Ed :)

It only costs about $30 per month to run, during the show all of the lights are never on at the same time. And most of the lights are LED. It I just left all of the lights on it would be different.

All of the trees and bushes are wrapped with Red, Green, Blue and White lights and I have individual control over each. Prior to the light show starting I have all of the lights change colors every 15 mintues. They can be all Red, all blue, all green or all white, and they can be any combination of those colors as well like Red and Green. Then I broadcast over an FM frequency, about a mile radius, Christmas music 24 hours a day :)

Woweeee! Lots of work - good thing you have a sharp crew to help you!! What a fun way to bond with them, too.

I love the blue lights!!

Who has to take them down and how do you keep all those lights organized?!

Josh and I take them down, mostly me. Everything is labeled and boxed, very organized to make it easy to set up. Taking it down is quick (except for unwrapping the trees, but still faster than setting up) except for the marking, labeling and organizing into boxes that are also labeled and organized :ha:

Wow, just saw this (head in bucket). That is a lot of lights Chuck!!! Your grandkids are growing up fast. Is this a family project? How do you like your GoPro Session? Good luck with the contest.

Do all the neighbors do lights too, or just put the sign in their yards.

Hi Cheryl, Thanks ! It is really my project, started doing a Christmas light display over 20 years ago and it just gets bigger every year. The kids get me Walmart gift cards for my birthday so I can buy more lights. It has turned into an annual family weekend get together to help Papa with the lights :)

The GoPro Session is kind of a pain but nice in many ways. The quality is great but using my phone as a monitor takes a hand that I could use for other things. For the light show I have a transistor radio to catch the sound, the GoPro on a tripod and the phone as a monitor, gets a little crazy. Probably not the best application for this camera, but for most everything else it works great. If I had to choose over again I would probably have gotten one of the other GoPro cameras instead.

I am in a lower category because I am not running as many channels as a lot of others, hopefully a benefit. There is a lot going on with only two 16 channel controllers and 4 cosmic ribbons. They also judge on how well the lights are synchronized to the music and I think that part is pretty good.

No other houses with quite the number of lights that I put up, and none of them broadcast the music over FM :)

There are some very nicely decorated houses on the block however. We have a neighborhood get together every year when we start up the light show. All of the neighbors come by the house and we have cookies, hot chocolate and roast marshmallows while they check out the new display, lots of fun.

We do have a very large display not too far from us (about 12 miles away), they do a few things that I would like to do :)
