The Vibe Chronicles

Postby Kent Frost » Thu Sep 03, 2015 11:05 am

I started a new project a few weeks ago about the electronic music scene in my city as seen through my eyes. I was quite the archivist for our little scene, but I never really did anything with the footage I shot. Once I moved over to DSLR's, however, the video take pretty much stopped and I shot mostly photos (which aren't going into this project).
Then, when video technology moved away from tapes and more towards memory cards, I bought another camera and somewhat started up again. Then, yet again, as technology advanced and both video & photo became possible on a DSLR, I began shooting even more. I covered this scene over the span of about 10 years, from 2002-2012. Granted, some years had more footage than others (in fact I skipped 2005 entirely somehow), but for the most part I have footage spanning a good chunk of time covering somewhere in the neighborhood of 50+ events. The footage near the beginning is pretty grainy, but as it progresses you can see the improvement to the picture quality from each gear upgrade I made, starting from a 1997 model MiniDV camera, to a newer MiniDV, to standard-def on SD card, and then finally HD on SD card. All Canon. During that time I was also a DJ myself, which I periodically still dip into from time to time. I recently put together about an hour long mix (which I will probably need to extend to cover all the footage I'm going to be putting into this thing) that I'm using as the soundtrack to this project, and the editing is in time with its beat. I also have penciled-in plans to do audio interviews with many people who are in the video and laying some of that over parts throughout it.

This project will probably mean more to me and the people who are in it than anyone else, but I'm still kinda proud of how it's turning out. There's a ton of footage, and there are no clips longer than 8 seconds, most are no more than 2-4. I'm only up to 2006 at this point and it's already almost 37 minutes long. So I have a long way to go.

Enjoy a 2 minute preview. :)

That was pretty cool. You have the super quick cut down to a science. Music was good too. Was the black borders in the corners in some shots an effect or just because of an added lens?

Thanks, Sidd. That was a screw-on wide angle adapter. In fact, that was only complaint about it.

Fast edit! I really liked the time-lapses at the end. ::CLAP:

I think if MTV was still making music videos you would have a job no problem... :yh:
