Colors of Fall

Postby Ron Hunter » Sat Nov 01, 2014 7:32 pm

I created a 2min video of fall foliage footage I shot with my GH4 last week. I used 12-35mm f/2.8 lens for all shots. Footage was shot in 4k 24fps and edited in FCPX 1080p timeline. No color grading was done in post; I used Andrew Reid's GH4 recommendation for Cinelike V settings and it seemed good enough as is. All shots were manual exposure and manual focus. The focus peaking allowed me to achieve good focus on almost all shots. The 4k allowed me to zoom in/out with no detectable loss of image quality. And the beautiful weather and leaves made it all work perfectly!

Please let me know what you think of this!

Beautiful! The leaves fluttering by in the wind at 1:20 added a nice touch. :TU:

I always enjoy seeing all the trees change color especially when you get multiple trees with such vibrant colors. It is as if is someone came and painted everything overnight. It must be a really enjoyable time to drive around and see all that color. Good job Ron.

A very well balanced creation, Ron: the music adds to the images as much as the images tribute to the notes.

Thanks everyone! I'm learning more about this camera every day. I hope to use it to film Christmas lights this year. I also want to play around with the slo-mo capabilities.

Watching the video on Vimeo made me realize color correction may have helped, but it looked great on my laptop without it. I just went back into FCPX and checked the video scopes. Turned out I should have used color correction. Crap. Oh well, live and learn.

I manually turned the zoom ring in a couple of clips so the motion wasn't always steady, but now I know I can do that in post so I can avoid that motion in the future. And I'll use a monopod next time. Keep shooting and keep learning, eh?
