Blaze the Corn Snake

Postby Ron Hunter » Sun Jan 12, 2014 4:28 pm

This weekend I created a 2 minute video about my son Josh and his corn snake, Blaze. The video basically describes how to care for a corn snake and it contains a pretty cool "feeding sequence" with close up shots of the snake feeding on a small mouse.

This video was new for me in a lot of ways:
- I used artificial lighting for all shots.
- I used Rebel T4i for "interview" shots and HV30/HFR400 for "feeding" shots
- ATR3350 lav mic and Zoom H1 recorder used for audio.
- I actually created a script/shot list for this video.

The snake took over 10 minutes to eat the mouse but I condensed it to around 30sec. I'm really pleased with how the colors and close-ups turned out. I did not do any color/exposure/WB adjustment, everything was fully auto.

I look forward to your feedback!

Very nicely done! The closeups of the snake were great, including color. Really got a feel for the beauty. Pretty efficient critters, only one mouse per week.

Nicely shot Ron! Your son is a natural and this looks like a segment from kid's science channel. Ok, I will admit I did fast forward part of the mouse eating....the closeups were too real for me (which means your shots were very, very good!). :TU:

I agree with everyone else, very well done. Nice change of shot angles was great, a real professional editing job :TU:

Thanks for the wonderful feedback! Like I said at the top of the thread, this was an experiment on many fronts and I wasn't sure how it would all come together. During the filming Josh commented about all of the "stuff" I used "on set" and he asked if the video would be a pain to edit. I laughed and said "Nah". I learned quite a bit from this little project and I'm pleased with how it all turned out.

I also sent a link to Josh's science teacher. Hopefully that will score him some extra credit. :-D

How was the audio for this movie? I struggled to balance the narration with the soundtrack and I'm wondering how the soundtrack came through.

The narration audio was clear and sounded good to me.

Very simple and perfect shots, reassuring, nice both static images and video picks.
Oh, synchronicity is really well done !

I thought the audio was just fine. If I don't have to adjust the volume while listening that's good :)
