Related: témérairement (adv) - rashly, recklessly; la témérité - rashness, recklessness " Pronunciation: (click the speaker icon) http://french.about.com/od/vocabulary/g/temeraire.htm John, Thanks so much for your link to the ship's history. I was aware of some of it, but not all. A little history re: David Austin and the "new variety" of roses he has bred. I'm surprised to see that he began as long ago as he did. English roses seemed to take the world by storm in the mid 1980s. I've always loved all roses, but as time goes by the English roses seem to be taking over my garden! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_C.H._Austin Bob is right about the name being for the rose. Austin names his roses for "things English", including members of his own family, characters from Shakespeare and other English literature, famous English gardeners, and from English history, such as Fighting Temeraire for the ship so important in the Battle of Trafalgar, The Endeavour for the ship in which Captain Cook discovered new lands in the South Pacific, etc. Another of my favorite Austins in my garden is Lady Emma Hamilton, named for Lord Nelson's mistress. The lady herself: Lenovo W70l; 1.6 GHz, i7 quad core, Win 7, 64 bit, 16 gigs DDR-3 RAM; NVIDIA Quadro FX 2800; Two 1T 7200 internal drives; BluRay burner
