Strollabout

Postby Kent Frost » Tue Oct 15, 2013 10:50 am

This is the video that I posted on the photography forum where momoffduty saw it and subsequently referred me here. I was aiming for a "found footage" look, as one might find old 8mm film reels in a relative's basement or closet or something. The clips were all taken at different times, several this summer and some from the last couple of summers. More than anything this was an experiment in textures and film noise overlays. You'll have to go to Vimeo to see it in HD, but it looks best that way, IMO. Let me know what you think. :)

Not too often I see depth of field/focus used in video the way you did. The music fit perfectly, and I liked the cuts to the music. The timelapse was sometimes surreal. ::CLAP:

Another really beautiful piece, Kent!

Do you do this professionally? I can't imagine the amount of work you put into your videos!

Thanks. :)

I have done a few videos for hire, but not enough to really consider myself as doing it professionally. I'm working towards that, I suppose, but I've primarily been concentrating on portrait and wedding photography, and a lot of the texturing techniques I use in my videos have been inspired by what I do to my photos. I've been aiming to do more video portraits for kids, families, high school seniors, and couples, but so far have only done them for a couple of families. We're having a baby next month, and I plan on doing one for him as well, so maybe we can corner a market for newborn videos as well. :)

I posted this on Vimeo and will say it again, I really like the quiet resolve to this video. Beautiful & reflective video art. :TU:

Wow. You are really talented! You say above that this isn't your day job...it should be. If I was as good as you are I would change jobs!

The use of DOF and variable focus is very impressive, and the music is perfect for this. You combined video clips that, if originally filmed without DOF and focus adjustment, would not have been particularly interesting. Tree leaves? Rusty bridge? Clouds? Yawn. However, DOF/focus adjustment and your editing made all the clips work together beautifully. Ethereal and surreal. And the film noise made the video even better. On a related note, it's interesting how we are always looking for higher resolution cameras with better optics and faster frame rates, and here you are adding noise to the image! But you can't argue with the results.

Watching your videos has given me quite a few new ideas for videos. Keep 'em coming! :TU:

I like that Kent. I need to start looking at what my subject is in the frame and use that DOF. I started learning photography this year. Back last January I had no ideal what a F stop was and all that stuff. I join the Indianapolis Camera Club to help learn it. We have a meeting to night and it's critique night. So I get to see if I'm improving.

I love the videography and the scenery, Kent .. but I found the scenes changing with the music kind of jarring. I would have loved to watch that with smooth soothing music. But I found myself anticipating the next change, rather than enjoying the scenery.
