Mum Leastflycatcher and her three sons

Postby Francesco Carzedda » Fri Jul 19, 2013 5:31 pm

Good evening,

I have just read Steve Grisetti's post on the importance of telling a story.
Of course, it is basical!
Even when I don't think about one story (and I am quite desperate during editing, too abstract), sometimes it writes itself, it is a duty.
I just wanted to choose the most exciting shots of three baby Leastflycatchers that Mum donate to my house (just outside the bathroom window).

Please see the short movie at

I chose the song from the Ccmixter.org, according to the wood atmosphere, and automatically words and images matched... 'hesitate' with a backward jump, 'the change' with the pets in the nest, 'free from hate' with their hug, the melody with their singing, Mum Leastflycatcher looks as if she was teaching them (in a quite severe way) to tell "in peace" in the closing scene.
The story is done, brand new from my unconscious.

A very simple video shot with my handy videocam on its tripod pointing to the nest... ehm... I moved into better light... but no panic for the chicks, the place I chose was calm and silent and very close the one Mum chose.
Some noises, nevertheless, disturbed them (cars passing by, for example) and - as well as they heard Mum arriving - they opened their little beaks.
I had to chose the sequences and "dream" the story, thinking about a story but almost unconsciously.
Thanks Steve, my stories will be written when I am awake, I have already started; I think I'll improve !

Very nice Francesco! A gold mine right out your window. I was wondering how you got the closeup shots. Nice edit with the music at :46 mark.

Thanks Cheryl and Dave,
sometimes one needs encouraging even for... dreaming :-)
The videocam was at more or less one meter from the nest, pointing at it, and it shot (while I was away) with an autonomy of one hour and a half.
The nest was in a little skylight, Mum Leastflycatcher makes it there every year :-) ...
Mine it is a very simple webcam:
