Lines or "streaks" on files

Postby tedco » Fri May 12, 2023 1:06 am

On a number of old VHS tapes (VOB format) which have been digitised, I have noticed horizontal "streaks" at the left of the screen and also when objects are recorded.

They always seem to go from left to right, as attached image shows.

I have tried running the VOB files to mp4-format through HandBrake with a few filters, but with no difference.

Any help is as always greatly appreciated, thanks

The problem on the edge of a clip could be cropped, but if it is in the center, I don't think you can fix that easily.
Masking that might be a nightmare.

How are you digitizing your VOB files? VOBs are already a digital format.

That said, do you see these marks on your original DVD?

They look like interlaced video 'scan line traces'.

You might try Handbrake to convert from interlaced frames to progressive frames to see if that resolves the problem. Details on 'how to' can be found here.

Thanks for all your replies,

The tapes were copied from a vhs-recorder onto a dvd-recorder.

As I haven't got the tapes anymore, I can't say for sure if the "streaks" were on the tape.

They may have been introduced while digitizing to the dvd-recorder.

I have tried a few settings in the Filters > Deinterlace section, but the "streaks" are still there.

Guess I have to accept,

It is likely that the streaks were on the original VHS tapes as those recordings would have been interlaced, not progressive.

Re-capturing the tapes might enable conversion to progressive frames but, as you say, the tapes are no longer available so that is a dead end.

Sorry that I can't suggest any other solutions. :(

My thoughts exactly. They're most likely the results of going from interlaced VHS to DVD using a DVD recorder rather than a file converter.

Thanks for your replies,

I'm in luck as I still have the old Hi8 tapes.
I thought I had destroyed them, but it was my old VHS tapes that were thrown out.

I have dusted my very old Samsung VP-W90 Hi Video Recorder and charged the battery.

Will be interesting to see when/if I can get connected to the computer using my Elgato Video Capture device.

Thanks again for help and support.

Before you invest too much into your Elgato, I'd try a short test run. Make sure you can edit your digitized video in Premiere Elements and that you like the results.

In the past, Elgato digitizers (or the software that comes with them) have not married well with Premiere Elements.

I would suggest that if you have a tape cleaner to clean the heads before you download that might help the picture. You can also use alcohol and a q-tip to clean the head.

I think you can download from your camcorder to handbrake directly to de interlace the footage.

Thanks for all replies,

I managed to connect my video recorder to my computer and digitized directly using Elgato's Video Capture program.

However, not much change of quality from the previous capture, as lines are still there.
The new image attached.

I did notice that in early 1989, the lines are not there anymore.
From memory it was also the same time I replaced the cam-corder.

Maybe the previous cam-corder had some issues.

Revisiting this subject, I think I may have found a solution to the problem.

The Adobe Forum had a thread which linked to https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-elemen ... tions.html.

Near the end of the User Guide, I found "Set field options for imported interlaced video".

Following on this I selected "Reverse Field Dominance" and "Always Deinterlace" in the options.

Most "streaks" are gone and hardly noticeable any longer.

Thought this may be of help for other users.
