Export and Share Premiere Elements 2022

Postby tedco » Tue Mar 08, 2022 2:23 am

Hi,
I have several small video clips taken with digital camera's from around 2006 and saved as mgp files
Most of them have a resolution of 640 x 480 and 30 frames/sec.

I am now combining them into one movie but am confused as which Export & Share module to use.
I can not find any module's that matches the original resolution, although the Project Settings is at 640 x 480 as per video file.
They will most probably be viewed on a computer screen, although would be nice to view on flat screen - however, I do not expect a crisp clear picture....

I would appreciate any recommendation as to which Export & Share module resolution to use.

Thank you for your time,

Best wishes,
tedco

First, go to the Edit menu for your project and see what's on the General page under Project Settings. It should say 640x480 at 30 fps. Which means that your video should fil the video frame without black bars along the side. (If this doesn't happen, we can show you how to force those settings.)

For your Export & Share option, select SD 480 (720x480). The DV-AVI option is the only one that will give you a 4:3 frame.

But you can also create a Custom output by going to the Custom tab and clicking Advanced Settings. Select the H.264 option and, under Video Settings, click Match Source. This will create 4:3 MP4.

Hi Steve
Thank you for your reply.
I have tried selecting Match Source and noticed that although it becomes greyed out, it defaults to NTSC format.
I use PAL.
Does that affect the final video ?
Thank you for taken the time,
Best wishes

Didn't you say that your original footage was 640x480 at 30 fps?

Yes I did.

Project Settings is 640 x 480 30fps

Selecting Export & Share > Devices > Computer > Custom > Advanced Settings, I select the TV Standard as PAL, then Match Source.

Everything is then greyed out, and TV Standard revert to NTSC.
I am a bit confused as to why it would do so.

I have attached a screenshot.

Thanks again

Pixel dimensions for PAL are 720 x 576 at 25fps so the frame size of 640 x 480 at 30fps is strange. Matching source will override any other 'bespoke' settings hence they are greyed out.

Do you know the source of the video that you are using?

I'm not sure but could have been an Olympus C-3030 or one of the early digital cameras supporting video.
Not sure if exporting a 640x480 video to something with a greater resolutions like 1280 x 720 would negatively affect the quality.
I have always thought that resolution "in" should match resolution "out".
Thanks again.

Sadly, one cannot create pixels where there were none to start with. So, yes, quality will suffer but you would need to experiment to decide whether that loss of quality would be an acceptable tradeoff.

Having said that you could use this tool from Topaz Labs (haven't checked to see if they do a limited functionality free trial):-

This looks like a perfect match for me. If you're using 640x480/30 footage, your project settings are 640x480/30 and your output is 640x480/30, you have an ideal throughput. You don't even have to consider PAL vs NTSC.

Thank you for all your help, Steve and John,

I am using Topaz Labs GigaPixels AI - absolutely fantastic for stills.
And yes, they also have a "Try for free" for Video Enhance, and might give that a try.

Thank you again for help and support,
