Export and Share

Postby tedco » Sun Dec 20, 2020 5:19 am

Hi,
Using Premiere Elements 2021 and editing old VHS movies that have been digitized by transfer directly from VHS to a Sony Hard Disk recorder and then imported to my computer, I am confused as to which format I should be using when Exporting.
The original movies are in 720 x 576 and 25 frame rates.
Pixel aspect ratio 1.0940
The edited movies will most probably be viewed on a computer screen.
Just can't imagine they would look good on a 50" flat screen :-)
I have tried several formats such as 720x576, 1280x720, 1440x 1080 and 1920x180, all as mp4-H.264, but as mentioned, confused as to which format to choose.
Any help is much appreciated,

Thank you.

Well, 720x576 is 720x576 no matter what you output it as. You can output it as a 4K file and all you'll get is a very blurry 4K file.

In other words, your best output resolution is 720x576. That should give you a video that's as good as the original. (Which, for VHS was really only about 400x300 pixels.)

Let your TV do the rest. Today's HDTVs are pretty good at upscaling DVD video (which is also only 720x576) to look like HD. And you'll probably get better results letting the TV do the upscaling than you will over-rezzing your footage to HD.

Hi Steve,

Thank you for your reply.

I assume it would be the same for computer screens ?

Thanks again

Well, computer screens don't up-rez the way TVs do. So, if you start with a VHS video, it's going to look fuzzy on a 1920x1080 monitor at full screen no matter what resolution the output is.

As Steve said, the basic "rule of thumb" is that you can try to create pixels where there were none (e.g. increase from 720 x 576 to 1920 x 1080) but the results will be disappointing. However...

If you do want to attempt that then you might want to look at this:-

https://topazlabs.com/video-enhance-ai/

Normal price US$299.99 but on offer at US$139.99 and it is available to download for a free trial.

I haven't tried it myself so can offer no thoughts as to how effective it might be but I suspect that you will need a very powerful PC to run it on (or have plenty of time on your hands!!). :)
