What's the best way to zoom and follow a moving target

Postby Cindyg » Fri Sep 24, 2021 5:02 pm

I frequently video my horse. I set the camera on a tripod and film a wide area.

I want edit the footage to zoom in on my horse and follow him as we work together.

I am currently doing this with Pan and Zoom.

I'm happy with the results, but it's very labor intensive. Is there a feature better suited for this?

That is most likely the best way. Depending on the size of your camera you might consider investing in a gimble that has a follow me mode. You set the camera up to record put the camera and gimbal on a tripod and place the gimble in follow me mode and the gimble with camera attached will follow you. Many can be controlled via smart phone app.

That way you get the maximum resolution from the video instead of having to crop the picture.

Thank you. I do have a Pivo that has a follow me mode. I like my own editing better.

You could always use a couple camera to film then edit between them. I have also found that recording with a 360 cam makes that kind of editing easier as it is just keyframes. Sorry I do not know of a better solution.

I agree with Sidd. Trying to fix it in post production has a number of challenges and liabilities.

But that said, have you tried keyframing Motion to zoom in and around? I've made no secret of the fact that I think the Pan & Zoom tool is so badly designed I don't even use it. But it's designed to be used on photos, not video.

If you're trying to continually re-center a moving object in a video (which is what I think you're trying to do), manually keyframing makes much more sense.

Not as much sense of Sidd's suggestions, but it definitely makes more sense than using the Pan & Zoom tool.

Thanks, guys. Honestly, I had no idea Pan and Zoom was designed for still pictures. LOL. That explains why it's so difficult to use, I suppose.

I'll study up on how to use keyframes. Feel free to recommend training materials if you'd like.

And perhaps I'll try my Pivo again.

If you can Dropbox a short clip of your actual video, I'll be glad to create a quick, custom tutorial. Otherwise I can hunt for something in my collection.

The challenge is that what you're doing is pretty non-standard. For a number of reasons, it's not the best way to do what you're doing, as we've already discussed.

But meantime here's a basic tutorial on keyframing. It should get you started.
