Issues with

Postby juergenwoehl » Sun Jan 26, 2020 11:50 pm

Hello,
I love the videos you post on Youtube, they are a great start to get into video editing, thank you for that.
I am new to editing and got stuck. I bought a Panasonic G9 and made some 4k clips. When I look it up on my PC it looks great using Windows Media Player. When I put the clips in Adobe premiere elements, the clips show a lot of glimmer / flickering. When I export them 95% of that flickering/glimmer is gone, but some of it is still visible when I compare it with Windows Media Player. I am sure you all have seen this and know how to get around it, so I really would like to get some help...I am worried my new G9 has some issues...but why would then be the footage so clear using Media Player...any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Juergen--

I doubt the problem is with your camera. It's a very nice camera. But we should know more about the specs of the video you're trying to edit since this cam shoots in several modes, resolutions and frame rates.

Open a sample of the 4K video you're trying to edit in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy the report that is generated and paste it to this forum. This will tell us everything we need to know about the video.

Also, be sure to tell us which version of Premiere Elements you're editing with and on what operating system so we can move this question to the proper sub-forum. Since you are editing 4K, it might also be helpful to know your computer's processor and RAM load.

Thank you Steve,
So good to find an expert to talk to!
I have a 64-bit PC with an Intel Core i7-9700F CPU @ 3.00GHz, The PC has 32 Gbytes DDR4 Memory with a DRAM Frequency of 1064.4 MHz. The Graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER and the core clocks at 300 MHz. My operating system software is Windows 10 Home. My C drive has 447 GB and my D drive 1.8 TB.
Now the good news, I figured out what was making the picture so fuzzy.
If a make a new project and define it as 1080 p60 resolution and I force select the project setting, it is fuzzy for 1-2 seconds, than it is ok. If a make a new project, do not define it or define it but do not force the project setting, the clip is great right away.
Now, if I use 3 clips with 4k resolution and 24fps and I force it at 1080 in the timeline, it will be fuzzy for 1 sec then it is ok. But if I use 4 clips with 4k, 3 have 24fps and 1 has 60fps in the timeline, all clips are fuzzy.
If I used 1 clip at 4k with 24fps and 1 with 60fps in the timeline, then the clip stays fuzzy. In that case I can fix it when I load 1 clip with 24fps into the project assets and 1 with 60fps, but I move only 1 into the timeline. Then that clip is ok. If I move then the 2nd clip with 60 fps into the timeline, the quality stays good.
When I used a clip with 1080 60fps and a clip 4k 60fps, and put them both into the timeline at the same time, the clip comes out fuzzy again.
If you move these 2 into the project assets, move only one of them into the timeline, start that clip, and then move the second down, it is ok.
So as a summary I conclude that when you move a clip with the same resolution and the same frame rate into the timeline, the clips look all good.
Now I guess it is time for me to get your book and learn it before I waste more time in using trial and error mode.
Thanks for offering your help right away
Best,
Juergen

Still hard to say without knowing more about your source clip, Juergen.

But that said it sounds like you're judging your video quality by the way it plays back on your timeline. Remember that what Premiere Elements plays is just a preview. There are ways to make your preview look better, but it's still just a preview. Not the actual final product. To see that you'll need to output using Export & Share/Devices/Computer and then play back your output MP4 using a good player like the excellent, free VLC Media Player.

Also, please tell us which version of the program you're using so we can move your topic to the proper sub-forum.

Hello Steve,
thank you for your feedback.
When I have the fuzzy preview and export the file (MP4), it still has some issues, it looks like a diffraction pattern on the roof of my movie clip. If I export the non fuzzy file, the exported file looks perfect.
To answer your question, I am using Adobe Premiere Elements 2020. And I used the movies and TV player of Windows 10, getting the same results with Windows Media player.
I am curious to see if you can see the same issues I see.
More than happy to download the files somewhere to show you the difference
Thank you

I think to troubleshoot this, we're going to need to take it one step at a time, Jeurgen.

First take your original video from the camcorder and open it in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy the report it generates for the clip and paste it to this forum. This will tell us what we need to know about your original clip.

Well, I certainly don't see anything in the specs of the first clip that would indicate a problem. You should be able to edit it in version 2020 with no problems.

Your second clip should also edit in version 2020, although it uses a variable frame rate so you may have some challenges using both of these clips in the same project.

If you'd like to upload each of these clips to Dropbox, Mediafire or another file sharing site (Not YouTube or Vimeo because they change the
files) and share it with me at steve@ and the name of this web site, I'll play with them over the next week and see what results I get.

Hi Steve,
I uploaded 6 files via Dropbox to [MOD EDIT] to the email address that you proposed. Here is the content of the 6 files
1. P1001908 24fps 4k original file from G9 this is an original file from the G9
2. P1001909 60fps 4k original file from G9 this is an original file from the G9
3. jittering for Steve this is an Adobe Element file where I loaded 1. and 2. together into the timeline and then played it...this is the outcome
4. non jittering file for STeve this is an Adobe Elements file where I loaded first 1, start playing 1, then loaded 2 into the timeline
5. Jittering file exported for Steve...so this is number 3 exported...looks ok but you see at the beginning stripes on the roof of the house , looks like diffraction pattern
6. non jittering file for Steve exported...this is 4 exported...meaning I loaded file 1 into the timeline, played it, then added file 2 into the timeline...I exported that file and it comes out perfect

Hope all the transfers are coming ok and I explained it ok

Thank you

I've done some initial experiments and I've got good news and bad news, Juergen.

The good news is that both of the files are perfectly compatible with Premiere Elements 2020. I've loaded them into projects and then output each as a 1920x1080 MP4 which I've uploaded to our shared Dropbox.

The reason I reduced the files from 4K to 2K HD is part of the bad news. The bad news is that the juddering you're seeing is likely just computer lugging. These are pretty large files and your computer may be struggling playing 4K. You can improve 4K playback performance by downloading a good media player like the excellent, free VLC Media Player. Also, don't play your videos at full-screen on your computer. Reduce the size of the VLC Player viewer and you'll likely see less computer lugging.

And, yes, I know you've got a very powerful computer. But you may need to optimize your playback options to get good, smoother playback. Even in Premiere Elements, you may see improved playback if you reduce the size of your Monitor/Preview window rather than using it at full screen and 3/4 screen.

I also wouldn't recommend combining your 24p footage and 60 fps footage in the same project. The program can only match the specs of one frame rate or the other, and the one it can't match is going to have more challenges playing smoothly.

There are other video editors (Vegas Movie Studio Platinum, CyberLink PowerDirector) that offer proxy editing -- essentially creating lower-resolution previews of your video so that you don't have to struggle with these kinds of playback issues. So if Premiere Elements' inability to handle your heavy workload frustrates you, they may be better options.

Or, if you don't need a 4K workflow, you can also convert the videos to 1920x1080 and you'll get much faster editing performance.

But as far as your video and Premiere Elements are concerned, there is nothing wrong with your footage or how Premiere Elements handles it. What you're seeing is just the best Premiere Elements can do.

Hello Steve,
thank you for helping to understand the issue. It is great that we both come to the same conclusion. The problem only occurs if one combines the 24p footage and 60 fps footage in the same project and starts playing it combined. As I didn't know that this is causing issues, that is what I was struggling with. I see both clips separately perfect as I have a pretty powerful PC, graphics card and 32G RAM.
Thank you for helping me, I ordered your book and with that I will try to become an enthusiastic user of Premiere Elements in the future.
Thank you and have a wonderful weekend
