First 360 Video in 4k

Postby sidd finch » Sun Mar 24, 2019 4:02 pm

Well it was a bit more difficult than expected but this is my first project using DaVinci Resolve 15 and the Samsung Gear360 camera. Comments and criticisms always welcome.

Very nice, Sidd. I could sort of see the tripod underneath, but otherwise it's seamless.

How did you hide the tripod?

Thank you Steve. 360 is just completely different than what I am used to creating.

I used a small monopod with a 3 leg base. I think that there must be a blind area for the cameras the closer you are to the cameras but that is just a guess on my part. Having a monopod really helps to keep the video looking cleaner.

I also have a microphone stand that I use that helps to make the video look like it is floating. I just realized that I exported the video as 1080p and I do not think it looked quite as clear as the original. I just replaced the video with the 4k version so I am hoping it looks better.

Could the sharpness of 360 videos be an issue? I am not referring or critiquing Sidds video but 360 vids in general. For instance, Vimeo seems to default to 360P when playing on my computer and it is really blurry. Normal Youtube videos, (not 360 videos) when played in 360P are much clearer for me.

It certainly gives a new perspective. I found myself pausing the video so that I had a chance to look around, although maybe that's what you're supposed to do. However, this was, effectively, still shots. I can see that in a video with a lot of 360 deg action you'd want to play it several times just to be able to look around without pausing while things were happening. I can envision a big city streetscape with lots going on, or a family party, etc. This must have been early morning before the museum opened. Looks like a fascinating place.

Chuck not sure why that happened. I checked vimeo and the video played for me.

Dave, In a sense you are right it does look like a still image. I did try to get to the Museum early before anyone was there walking around. But with nothing to get your attention it looks like a combo of stills. I did not think it would be to creative to include the portions of myself walking to and away from the camera.... I will have to pick a location that might look a bit more interesting. Although I think the part with the fish looked pretty cool being able to look around the pond.

I did try to make the clips longe so the viewer could pan around and check out the location. I think for me 360 lends itself to more panoramic style footage and not really any tight edits.

Treetop I agree on the soft footage. When I uploaded the 1080p version it looked pretty soft and blurry. Once I uploaded the 4k version the video looked a whole lot clearer.

I also have to say that using Davinci Resolve was a pretty pleasant experience. It is really easy to edit 360 video.

You really need that full 4K resolution. The problem is that the pixels are distributed over the entire 360 degree field of view and not concentrated into a 16:9 window. Only about a quarter of that is considered to be within a normal view. So, your 4K 360 degree video is similar in quality to conventional video at 1K (720P). When you reduce the resolution to 1080p (2K), you're looking at essentially SD quality (0.5K). It will be very soft. To get 1080P quality, you need a 360 camera that shoots in 8K.

If you're trying to avoid having yourself in the video, it's difficult. You are almost forced to the equivalent of a series of stills. Unless, of course, you mount the camera on a drone, a remote controlled vehicle, or use a long selfie stick and hold it directly over your head (to hide in the nadir). I think I hear the gears in Sidd's head turning.

Sidd, did you try the "Lock Direction" option in Inta360 Studio? I'm curious if it still works for video shot on another brand of camera. For me, turning that on locks the video point of view to the direction the front side of my camera is pointing. (The front side on mine is the "selfie" side -- the one with the control buttons.) Using that feature, you can point the camera in the desired direction as you move and/or pan to follow or direct attention to a specific person or thing. It's still scrollable by the user, but if they don't scroll they see what you want them to see. With it off, it uses a fixed frame of reference -- it doesn't follow the camera orientation.

You're just not being creative enough, Bob. Here's Sidd attempting to blend in inconspicuously as he videos in 360:

Dave there were just too many dogs trying to take advantage of me to answer natures call... lol

But Along the lines of Bob's comments I did think of wearing the camera helmet mounted with a cone on the selfie to block myself out. The cone would have ended up being too big.... :)

Dave, got to admit, I didn't consider that option. That particular option might stand out in that specific location. Perhaps he could make an obelisk or stele costume. That way he could walk around carrying the camera and hide in plain sight.

Regarding the cone/helmet mount, the further away you can mount the camera using a selfie stick, the smaller you'll appear and the cone can be smaller too.

And thanks to Bob for that explanation of why it's really fuzzy at 360p resolution. I am unable to view Sidds video in any greater resolution as my DSL is too slow here.

Dave you are 100% correct. What the heck was I thinking. The best place to hide is in plain sight..... A green screen suit then key myself out. The only downside is that it might end up being a big key.... lol
