Playback stops at random

Playback stops at random

Postby ojh » Wed Feb 17, 2021 4:52 am

In Premiere elements 2019, when editing, I experience that the playback stops at random. I just have to click play to restart, and when playing the same clip again, the stop position changes or the stop does not happen at all.
I have tried to untag "Use hardware acceleration" in settings.
However, it has not solved my problem.
Can anybody help me.

This usually indicates some background program interrupting the playback. This could be your antivirus program or it could be a piece of malware or bloatware installed on your system. Or it could be an innocent piece of software (Steam, for instance) that you installed without realizing it is constantly running.

You can try downloading and running Malware Bytes. See if it cures it. Otherwise it may take some detective work to figure out what is causing the interruption.

Thank you for your quick answer.
I can rule out malware.

It might be my anti-virus, but I think a more realistic shot is, that I changed from Windows 365 to a single user license to Windows 10.
When I used Windows 365, I used the same anti-virus program (F-Secure) and the only thing new is the change of Windows license.

I have never had this problem before.

I have tried disconnecting my web connection. This doesn´t change anything.

Try turning off your antivirus. Then try this experiment.

Press the Windows+R keys and, in the box that opens, type MSConfig. In the System Configuration box that opens, go tot he Services Tab. Check the box that says Hide All Microsoft Services and then click Disable All and reboot your computer. (Make sure afterward that your antivirus program didn't turn on.)

Then, with no other programs open, go to you Windows File Explorer and go to C/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Premiere Elements 2019 and double-click file PremiereElementsEditor.exe. (This will bypass the startup windows and only open the program itself.) Open your project file and see if it plays smoothly.

If it does, we know that you're being interrupted by some background service. And we can do some investigating and figure out which one is the problem.

Thanks again for your answer

I followed your very instructive guide to the letter.
Unfortunately, the playback stopped just as it did before.
There is one information that I, by error, didn´t provide:
I have reinstalled the program from http://installationfiles.dk/Adobe/Premi ... 64_ESD.zip
With my license key from 2019.
The reason for the change of windows version and reinstallation of Premiere elements was, that my hard drive had to be replaced.
I went from a mechanical disk to an SSD, both the size of 2 TB

You might just have me stumped here, ojh.

One other thing to try. Open up the program and then open up your Task Manager. (Right-click on your Task Bar and select the option.) Watch your processes in the Task Manager.

You should only see Premiere Elements and the Task Manager listed in your Apps. But watch your background processes. As you play your Premiere Elements timeline, is there a process that's indicating Disk usage whenever your timeline playback stops?

If that doesn't give you a clue, I'm not sure what to recommend. I've been assuming you've got a good i7 or better processor with at least 12 gigs of RAM. But something is interrupting the program. And, if even after you've shut off your antivirus and all of your background processes you're STILL seeing this interruption, I don't know how much deeper you want to dig.

May be a long shot!!
Are your video files on the internal drive or an external one?
Many moons ago it was necessary to have the video files on the internal HDD as there were read/write delays to the external drive.
[once you have finished you project you can move all the files to an external drive]
Just a thought/suggestion.

Thank you again for all your effort.
I have tried your last suggestions and here is the outcome:

The CPU usage is 6,8% at its max. for PE and less than 30% in total
Memory usage is at 32% at its max.
The disk usage is at 1,6MB/s at its max.

Spec:
Intel Core i7-2600 CPU 3,4 GHz
RAM 16GB
Windows 10 home vers. 1909

I understand that this is difficult and will try to work on with the challenge.

Do you have anything plugged in via USB? An external drive for instance?
Your screen capture is helpful, but can you post a screen capture that shows all of the background processes you have running?

F Secure really looks like the most likely suspect. Did you save you've tried shutting down all of F Secure's processes and you still had the problem?

Sorry. A screen dump won't mean much to me.

Anybody else on this forum able to read one?

Thanks for all your help.

I now uninstalled F Secure, started Premiere Elements according to your instructions (solo)
and the problem continued.
Tried different projects - new and old - rendered and not rendered.
Same problem with projects rendered and projects not rendered.

I think maybe, I will look for a Windows update, as the only difference between a functional Premiere Elements and a non-functional one, is the switch of Windows version.

One last question:
Is your guide to Premiere Elements only available on Amazon.

I will return as a subscriber shortly, and will of course share the solution if I find one
