25 fps or 50fps Load on CPU

25 fps or 50fps Load on CPU

Postby John Walker » Thu May 21, 2020 8:18 am

I recently upgraded my Graphics Card which has improved the performance of my programs with the exception of PRE2018. I understand that PRE doesn't use the graphic card for acceleration hence no change in the performance. If I switch Hardware Acceleration on, I can't see a lot of difference, apart from numerous RED Clips on my timeline. My PC was a high performer when a I built it a few years ago but it's a snail in comparison with current specs. My main problem is scrolling through clips and playback of the timeline with 50fps clips. Even after render it's not smooth. Being a pensioner, building a complete new system is not an option. However, I could run to a better CPU but can't find the info as to which one would make a difference to editing with PRE. Any advice would be appreciated.

If that isn't a workable option, would I be better sticking to 25fps footage. How much difference does that make to the CPU performance as against 50fps?

John

Without knowing the exact model number of your CPU I can't say if it's the weak link in your chain.

But look it up by clicking the Start button on your Windows Taskbar and typing in the word "system". Then look it up on this chart.
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

If it rates an 8500 or better, you're in pretty good shape. 10,000 or better and you're in great shape.

Thanks,

My CPU is an Intel i5 4690K Rated on the link you gave a benchmark of 5,542. Based on your comments, I would guess that's what's holding my system back.

My next problem will be finding a higher benchmarked CPU that will match my Motherboard which is a Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H-CF.

If there isn't a suitable higher spec CPU, do you think I would be better sticking to a max of 25fps or will it not make any difference?

Processing twice the frames does make a difference but what might help you more is a graphics card with more RAM. You can upgrade, if possible, to something that will help lighten the load on your CPU. I would do that before upgrading the CPU.
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

Thanks Chuck.

My upgraded graphics card has 4GB of RAM - My previous card was only 1GB. I'm not really aware of any improvement with PRE despite a massive improvement when running a benchmark test for the whole PC.

It seems like PRE is not taking advantage of it and yet other programs/streaming etc are running better.

I'm very limited on an upgraded CPU with Benchmark 8500 or over due to my Motherboard having a Z97 chip-set - limited to 4th and 5th Generation CPU's. Unless I'm missing something - my knowledge is fairly limited and based on mainly searches and specs.

Ok after further searching there isn't GPU Acceleration support in Premiere Elements like there is in Premiere Pro. You can move to Premiere Pro for around $30 per month, that may be an option. What exactly is the poor performance you are seeing with the 50fps clips vs the 25fps clips if any?

Thanks Chuck

I had read that Elements relies solely on the CPU for it's performance which is why I was looking at the CPU upgrade route. Steve suggested that I should be looking at a CPU with a benchmark of at least 8500. My current CPU is 5500 :( .

The nearest description I can give is that with 50fps footage the timeline 'stutters' when being scrolled or played back. This make editing very tedious. I'm presuming the CPU is at it's limit. It's ceetainly hitting the ceiling when viewed in task manager.

I went for 50fps as I understood the quality is a lot better but if you say there's nothing or little in it I'll stick to 25fps for future projects.

Cheers
John

So everything is fine when you edit 25 fps but not 50 fps? You can lower the quality of the timeline, that might help. Under Preferences set the Timeline Render Quality to Draft and see if that helps.

What are you planning to do with the video when you are finished editing? If you export to MP4 it won't be at 50 fps will it? My guess is you will defeat the purpose of editing 50 fps when you export to something much less anyway. Not sure it is worth the effort really. I'm sure others have a better opinion of the benefits of editing 50 fps footage if there are any.

25fps is the frame rate used for TV video content in the UK and any other countries that use a 50Hz power standard, such as Germany, Australia...so 25fps should be OK and it is a cheaper (free?) option when compared to the price of a new(er) CPU and motherboard. :-D

Looks like the Core i7-4790K is the fastest you can put on that motherboard. IMHO it is not worth it. A speedier chipset like Steve recommended is best.

Thanks everyone,

It looks like the i7 4790K (The K version is the fastest AFAIK) has a benchmark of 8115 so is just within Steve's recommendation for a minimum benchmark for video work. Elements is totally reliant on the CPU and the the Graphics Board so the faster the CPU the better?. As I've said my current CPU is only around 5500.

Changing the CPU seems to be my cheapest option. I can't warrant the monthly cost of Premiere Pro. A new PC is not an option financially. I can sell my current CPU on Ebay which will help.

I just need to be absolutely certain that the i7 4790K will match my motherboard.

Regards

John

Like Sidd said above that CPU is really not worth what little you will gain just to edit 50 fps video. What is the end result of the editing going to be John? In reality I don't think you gain much over 25 fps video, especially if you are not exporting the final product at 50 fps anyway. It's like editing 4K video to export to 720p, what's the point. Have you seen a difference in the end result between the two or have you not gotten that far yet?

Re: 25 fps or 50fps Load on CPU

Postby John Walker » Sun May 24, 2020 12:12 pm

Thanks everyone,

I think the best way for me to go is to stick to 25fps and not upgrade. You have all saved me money that probably wouldn't have given me any worthwhile gain so thank you again for that.

It's strange how things change. At one time I was ahead of the game with Computers in general and it was me giving out advice. This was in the 70s/80s in the days of the Vic20, Commodore 64, the BBC Micro and so on. Technology is moving at such a fast pace now, it's only too easy to fall behind. If it wasn't for forums like this, I'm not sure quite where I would be.

So 25fps and a smooth editing timeline it will be for now. Of course, if my lottery numbers come up, then the game will change :)

Best wishes
John

Sounds like a good decision John, hope the lottery thing happens though :TU:

If you have some time on your hands you could try out Premiere Pro for 7 days free, it isn't a huge learning curve just to put some clips on the timeline and see how it plays. The basics are much like Premiere Elements so your current experience will help a lot.

John the 50fps is really good for action shots where there is a lot of movement, or you want to slow something down.

A higher fps does not mean a higher quality video. When you change your frame rate, you’re not changing the file output size (e.g., 1080p / 4k). Whether you shoot 24fps or 120fps, you can have the same 1080p HD quality output. But, something to consider is that a higher frame rate can help you achieve a smoother shot if you’re shooting handheld. Because everything is slowed down, all of the camera shakes will be less noticeable.
