20 year old DV video

Postby Craig1 » Sun Jan 14, 2018 5:44 pm

I have a number of old DV files. When I added the files to a project, I found out a number of features were not available like the auto analyze and auto fix. By the time these videos were downloaded from the tapes, they lost a lot of sharpness and color. I have searched the community for this specific situation but cannot find anything. Can anybody point me in the right direction to get the best product I can out of these files
Thanks!

You should be able to use the sharpen effect. This should help a little but your source video is what it is. I would recommend using between 10 and 15 % on the sharpen effect.

For the color you can try experimenting around with some of the color changing features from the video effects area like color balance and equalize or brightness and contrast. You might just try to see what appeals to you and then just copy the effects to the remaining clips.

Sidd,
Should I try to convert these to a more usable format? Or will I lose too much?
Thanks for your reply,

Every time you convert, you lose quality.

The extension on the file is DV. I'm sure they were downloaded from a mini DV tape.

What program did you use to capture them originally? Premiere Elements would normally capture the tapes in .AVI format.

Are you sure it is not a DV-AVI file?

It has been a number of years but I think the process was to use iMovie to download the files from the camcorder which used the mini DV tape. So what I have now are digital files on my hard drive with the extension DV. I knew I was in trouble when I tried to use Auto Fix. The Auto Analyze comes up first and then I received an error message that says it can't do Auto Analyze on this file. Does this clear it up. Thanks so much for trying to help.

Found this, kind of explains the problem. Maybe the files can be converted to MP4 or another common format using Quicktime?

Another suggestion I have heard is to copy the files and rename them .avi This has worked some of the time but the best result would be to convert the files to .mov with Quicktime. It is also possible to convert with other applications like Adobe Media Encoder to .avi which would be the best conversion for these files.

I'm not sure why you're having any problems at all, IMHO.

.dv files ARE DV-AVIs or DV-MOVs, which are virtually identical. They are the easiest format in the world to edit in a program like Premiere Elements. There should be no need to convert them or change their suffix -- though I suppose it wouldn't hurt to change the suffix to .mov.

You can open a .dv in MediaInfo and post the report there if you'd like, to confirm it. But you don't get better than .dv, as far as standard def video goes.

Steve and all,
Thanks for the continuing help. Here is what is happening. I drag a clip to my timeline and click on Adjustments and then choose Smart Fix. A box comes up that says starting Auto Analyzer. I then get an error message box that says "One or More selected files could not be auto analyzed."
I just tried changing the extension to .mov with the same results.
Just as a test, I imported an MP4 file and the Auto Analyzer and Smart Fix worked just fine.
Again, I imported these files from the mini DV tape into iMovie.

Update: I imported another MOV file and Auto Analyzer and Smart Fix worked fine. This video was imported onto my hard drive from a SD Card using Play Movies Home which I downloaded from the Sony site. I'm thinking my problem is rooted in the iMovie download.

I just tried it with a DV-AVI on my Windows 10 computer and it work just fine.

Have we confirmed that you are NOT seeing a yellow-orange "render" line above your DV clips when you first add them to your timeline?

Open one of your DVs in MediaInfo (a free download). In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy and paste the report it generates to this forum.
