Shoot at 4K/30 but edit with Elements 2018 on 1080 timeline?

A Mavic Pro author states that doing so by making use of the Elements Scale to Frame Size option results in a) improved 1080 output b ) the ability to crop the frames.

The technique of downscaling a higher resolution video to a lower resolution video to get a higher apparent sharpness has been around a while. I remember seeing lots of posts recommending doing that with HD to SD back when HD first became available in consumer level camcorders. The problem of doing that is, in the end, you have a lower resolution video. I generally see these types of discussions when the capability of higher resolution is relatively new and the devices that can display it few. Technology moves on and eventually, you're going to have a TV or display device capable of using the higher resolution video at a size where you can see the difference and you're going to want that higher resolution. It's already happened with SD -- there are probably some holdouts still producing SD videos, but I don't and no one I personally know does either. We're on the cusp of that happening with HD now. Even my phone shoots 4K and all but one of my TVs support 4K (and I'll be replacing the one that doesn't very soon).

If you are happy with standard HD and want to do this, you certainly may. The one thing I would caution you to do is NOT use Scale to Frame Size. Scale to Frame Size is applied prior to any applied effects and you end up with a permanently reduced resolution. Effectively, you've converted your 4K to HD before you've edited a frame. If you do intend to crop and scale up a portion of the video, be aware that you will be scaling up the reduced resolution HD version, not the 4K version and you will be effectively scaling past 100%. You don't want to do that. Instead, manually scale the video to fit the HD frame. Then, when you crop and scale up, you will be able to scale to 100% of the full resolution 4k size without losing resolution.

As a former English major, I love that sentence.

Another -- award-winning -- drone specialist writes (may not be an exact quote): You're flying a drone ... move in close enough to fill the frame ... NEVER crop your stills.

The latter is what I've been doing for years (cropping during the shoot).

I've found that shooting at 1080 30 (PRE does not handle 1080 60, which I would prefer) with an ISO of 100 and a shutter speed of 1/60 -- plus making ample use of Polar Pro ND-PL filters -- provides a very satisfactory result with the Mavic's normal/standard color profile and AWB, and then editing in PRE 2018.

Although PRE 2018 cannot handle 1030 60, I've found that the program's Remapping Tool performs very respectably as a substitute method for simulating slow motion. I haven't yet tried the Fast Motion and Reverse tools, as I've only recently started using the Mavic.

George, I believe you should be able to edit your 1080 60 fps footage in Premiere Elements 2018 by creating a Custom Setting. Here's how I just did that... (you may not need the 5.2 level setting. I had that checked already from when I created a 4k, 60 fps setting.)

Image

---------------------------------

In Premiere Elements 2018, "Expert" setting, open 1080 60fps file and drag it to the timeline.

You will see an audio file available, but no video.

On the upper right side of the screen, click:
Export and Share.

Click the "Custom" button, then "Advanced Settings" to create a new Custom Setting.

You should get a popup "Export Settings" dialog box.

I selected H.264, Export Video and Export Audio both checked, even though at this point there is still no evidence of a video file.

About half way down, under "Basic Video Settings", set width to 1924 and height to 1082.

Under "Comments" I wrote the setting info.
I had the opportunity to save the new setting and then name it. Since I've already created a 4k, 60 fps setting, I named this Custom Seting 1080p_59.54 fps.

As soon as I did so, the image of the video showed up in the "Output Preview" screen.

Then when I opened a different file in PreEl 2018, both video and audio showed up automatically.

Hope that helps,

Paz
