Even Mars has a flying drone...

NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter will make history's first attempt at powered flight on another planet. It was riding with the agency's Mars 2020 Perseverance, with Ingenuity attached to its belly, landed on Mars February 18, 2021.

I hope they remembered to register it with the FAA!

Consider the following: no helicopter has ever flown higher than around 40,000 feet on our planet. But on Mars the air is just one percent the density of Earth’s—so thin that flying there is the equivalent of trying to take off at 100,000 feet.

To generate enough lift, the JPL had to redesign traditional rotorcraft down to the very shape and material of the rotor blades, while also dramatically cranking up how fast those blades spin. The final product sports two stacked rotors featuring blades roughly four feet in diameter that spin in opposite directions at 2,400 revolutions per minute.

Lets hope that it is registered. I think it might even be nuclear powered. Can't wait to see footage too

Someone must have videos of that thing flying here on earth as they must have tested it. Maybe on youtube?

They had to test in a giant vacuum chamber.

[conspiracy theory warning on]

Giant vacuum chamber? Piffle! They flew the prototype to Mars and recorded it there before returning the video to Earth on the starship Enterprise.

John P.L.E.A.S.E...........

Everyone knows the earth is flat and that these so called planets like Mars are really just a smoke and mirrors trick... :hyst:

Thanks for sharing Sidd. Amazing the technology to fly a drone in Mars' atmosphere.

I think one we get some video of the thing flying around I bet it will really put a new perspective on the red planet.

We'll probably have to send someone there to video that drone actually flying around on Mars. :)

I wonder how well Drone GPS positioning works on Mars. :)

My guess is that Perseverance will be taking the pictures and for GPS I found this:

To solve this problem, the ARL is developing a new GPS navigation system called a Self-Calibrating Pseudolite Array (SCPA). This array consists of several GPS pseudolites and receivers communicating amongst themselves using GPS signals. This allows the pseudolites to determine their own position relative to the each other with centimeter-level accuracy. Once the positions are accurately known, any vehicle can navigate within the array as it would with conventional pseudolites.
