DJI Blacklisted

Postby sidd finch » Sat Dec 19, 2020 11:23 am

DJI, the largest drone manufacturer in the world, landed a spot on the Department of Commerce’s “Entity List.”

This means that American companies can’t export US-made components to DJI without a license. It will be very hard for DJI to source parts for the United States This is a huge deal for the company, considering it owns about 77 percent of the US drone market. This is all according to early reporting from both Reuters and Drone DJ. Their reporting is based on a conference call they had with a state official.

I'd take that as a compliment, Sidd. It means they're THAT good!

I was reading an article this morning that stated that drones made by Chinese companies (which I would think are most) are transmitting their GPS and video data back to China, basically mapping out our country. I guess that's possible given that they do link with GPS satellites.

Wouldn't just using Google earth or Google maps be easier for them to map our country?

China has surveillance satellites, they don't need drone data for mapping. And, GPS satellites are unidirectional not bidirectional. Any data transmitted would most likely be through Internet access. The concern is that sensitive locations could be targeted. That's government, critical infrastructure, and possibly police related. If you are in those sectors, you should be careful. These sectors can buy DJI drones without this communication capability. It can also be turned off by the user.
