FTP question

Postby momoffduty » Tue Mar 16, 2010 1:35 pm

I plan on uploading a file via FTP, Per the website:

To access our FTP server you must use an FTP client. If you don't have one we recommend any of the following:

* Transmit or Cyberduck (Mac)
* SmartFTP or FileZilla (Windows)
* AnyClient or Net2FTP (Web)

In PrPro in the AME under the Other tab there is a section on FTP. Can I use this or do I need to download one of the above FTP clients? New to this and step by step info would be helpful. Thanks.

Don't know specifically about Pro, Cheryl. But I can vouch for FileZilla.

I installed it the other day, and I love it. I'll be putting in my next book's appendix as a recommended free utility.

use Core FTP lite, free and very well put together.
It is many features that the free ones have.
I do not recommend FileZilla.
CoreFTP will not let you down, ever.

Too late, just downloaded FileZilla. I'll try it and see if it works. How does this work? Do I put in the Host, User name, & password....anything else? Where do I attach the file I am sending? Really lost here. :(

if you just want to ftp a file to an ftp server you can just use windows explorer

for example if I put the following in the windows explorer window it will connect to the ftp server
ftp://psgftp.lecroy.com/

then you can sign in and just drag and drop

With FileZilla, you just enter the name of the server, your username and your password in the top boxes.

Then, in the panel labeled Local Site (your computer) on the left you browse to your files and drag them into the Remote Site panel ont the right. (In the remote site panel, you can browse to sub-folders on your FTP site if you need to.)

The bottom panel will show you the file load progress. And you can load several files at once.

I used to use Internet Explorer to FTP files -- but I can't get it to work since version 8. Firefox won't do it either. So maybe it's been removed from browsers?

In the top box I entered the website's Host, Name & Password. (Not mine.) I then added the files to the que at the bottom to transfer. The jpeg & word doc zipped right out. The video file, MOV h264 285mb, tried to transfer...over 2 hours...and got an error at the last minute. Tried again, another 2 hours and the same error. Used Firefox.

I sent an email to the website and their response:

There shouldn't be a file size limit. We recommend using a ftp client over a web based system, as it's much more reliable.

I am very confused on how this works. I downloaded the FileZilla Client and that is what I used.

Should I put my info in the top boxes & not the website's? If so, I didn't create an account or a password and then where would I enter the website's info?

Should I use Internet Explorer?

Per their response, confused over web based system???

Thanks

I don't think FileZilla is the problem. It sounds like you've done everything right.

I'm not sure why that larger file is a problem.

I have scoured the internet and even watched a tut on setting things up. Tried it again and the jpg & txt went thru in a zip. The video file had an error 1 hour into the transfer, about 52% done. The error: Connection Closed by Server yet the transfer was still going. ](*,)

Cheryl, I get those errors all the time - you're talking about the real-time log, right? Disregard disconnect errors (actually disregard all the errors), keep letting it do its thing - because I'm sure you've noticed that it appeears to keep transferring (progress bar, time remaining, etc).

Also, if it's an extremely large file and the transfer looks complete, but the directory doesn't refresh on the server (file doesn't look like it's there), simply reconnect and the file will be there.

It's just something I've gotten used to transferring humongous files for muvipix over the years.

Thanks Ron. I let it run even though the log said disconnected. Almost at the end of transfer received this message & the transfer started from the beginning again.

Response: 150 Accepted data connection
Error: Connection closed by server
Error: Disconnected from server: ECONNABORTED - Connection aborted
Error: File transfer failed after transferring 293,601,280 bytes in 7205 seconds

I downloaded SmartFTP and tried to send the video file and it said that this file was already in the folder dated yesterday. Sent an email to the website to see if they received it. Yesterday and today I had error messages that it did not go through.

The file is 284 mb and the number of the file in the folder is 298,588,946 bytes. This doesn't make any sense to me.

Uploaded the files again using SmartFTP. Realized that the video file that was in the folder was only a partial upload. Looks like it went through. Waiting to hear back from the website.
