Help with Importing Videos shot in Portrait Orientation

Postby britzman » Thu Jun 25, 2020 3:53 am

Looking for help trouble shooting this error. I am using Adobe Premiere Elements 14 on a laptop running Windows 10. I am trying to import videos taken vertical/portrait orientation with a Samsung S8 for editing, however every time I try, I get the following error:
Add Media Failure
Error Message
The importer reported a generic error
(See image below for screen shot)

To be clear, i have no problems importing videos taken landscape orientation, just portrait. I've done some Google searches with no luck solving this problems.

I have checked for updates and there are none to download.

Thanks for any assistance!

You don't say which phone this video is coming from, but that too could be a factor when you're dealing with an older version of Premiere Elements, as you are.

Open the MP4 in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy this text and paste it to this forum. Once we see the specs of the file you're trying to import we'll better be able to advise you.

BTW, I assume you do know that you can't edit a portrait video project in Premiere Elements. Premiere Elements can only edit video that is 4:3 or 16:9 widescreen. So even if you can import this video it's going to be placed in a widescreen project with a black, empty area on either side of the video frame.

Thanks for replying, I'll work on downloading that program to give the additional info requested.
I did include that the videos are being created on a Samsung S8 in the original post
And yes, I'm fine with the black box for the videos to align with the formatting requirements.
Be back as soon as I figure out MediaInfo.

Frame rate mode : Variable

Video editors have a hard time with variable frame rate. You might consider handbrake the free software to convert to a fixed frame rate.
