Closing Timeline Gaps en masse?

Postby John Walker » Fri Oct 09, 2015 3:28 pm

I've just uploaded Prem 14 and loaded a batch of clips for learning with.

The on-tutorials have been very helpful in getting started and I've ordered the book from Amazon UK but they've not dispatched yet.

All going well but one thing I can't get my head round.

I trimmed clips prior to adding to timeline but then needed to trim further on a number of clips. This left gaps along the timeline.

No problem with closing individual gaps but I can't find a way of closing all the gaps in one move. I was expecting to have the option once I'd selected the complete timeline but nothing found so far. I have searched this and other groups but no obvious solution.

Any suggestions?

Can you shift-click or ctrl-click all of the gaps and then delete them?

Thanks for that suggestion

Just tried that as I thought it had a good chance of working. Unfortunately, as I clicked (ALT Click/SHIFT Click) on the next gap the previous highlighted one cancelled. I can't find a way of highlighting all the gaps or any option that would 'ripple' the timeline back to a continuous story. It seems so longwinded having to do each one individually. As we're now up to version 14, I would have thought others have needed this option of found a quick fix for it.

Or am I working incorrectly perhaps? Other programs I've used have 'ripple' as standard with options to switch it on or off as required.

ps. To confirm - I'm talking about Video Track One.

You can't select all the gaps and ripple them in either Premiere Elements or Premiere Pro. You generally don't need to. If the clips are placed in the timeline so they are adjacent, with no gaps. and you need to trim a clip, you can use the cursor to click and drag on the end of a clip to adjust the trim point and the adjacent clips will ripple along with it -- no gap is created.

How are you retrimming the clips to create a gap??

Yes, that would be my question as well, how are you creating all of the gaps to start with?

I think you guys have hit the nail on the head - so to speak.

In my previous editing program, I would trim the clip prior to adding to the timeline. If I found later that I needed to trim it further to make the timeline slicker, I would double-click the clip which opens up a trimming window. When I trim this way using Premier it does as you suggest leave a gap.

I've just tried dragging the ends and hey presto - No Gaps - thank you. :exc:

Hopefully Steve's book will arrive soon.

Thanks Chuck,

I did watch them but didn't let it sink in properly. Probably because I've used another package for many years and my thoughts were - are I know how to do this and mentally skipped over it.

They are very good so plan to watch them all again and this time I'll take note! :D
