Publish and save format issue or ???

Postby sadddletree » Thu Mar 24, 2016 5:43 pm

We've been working on our video - thanks to all your help! - and have tested out quality, etc. by burning DVDs and seeing them on large screen TVs. Not great, but acceptable. Cropping and zooming can only go to 150 max before it looks too grainy on the TVs. Unfortunate, but that is what it is.

We finished a short section and I wanted to upload it to show you, but it isn't playing properly on our Windows Media player.

Full screen.jpg

Here is the uncropped section. We have it in 16:9 format so black top and bottom of the screen.

one crop.jpg

Here I have zoomed in towards the top of the screen. On the Essentials screen, it looks the same as the first - 16:9. Here it doesn't.

two crop.jpg

Here I have zoomed in towards the bottom of the screen. Same deal.

Question - why is this? Did I do something wrong when I published it? What is the best way to publish it to be watched on media player?

Thanks again.

A DVD burned from the same project plays normally on a TV or the computer.

So - what settings do I use to make it play correctly on the computer?

What format did you export to play on your computer in Media Player or VLC? Did you burn to a dvd folder, did you export an MP4, or use some other format?

Are you burning SD DVD or HD DVD? If you are burning an SD (Standard Definition) DVD then it will not look good on a large screen TV. SD just does not have the resolution for big TV's.

I am not sure about what workflow you are using but when you output the file try to use a "VBR 2 pass" setting. This will take a bit longer to render but will keep the best settings. Also the file size will be bigger so if space is an issue that will be a factor.

You might check your TV and see if it will play videos from a USB input. Try outputting your file and copy to a USB stick and see if the resolution is better. That way you can narrow down where the issue is.

Maybe I should start back a ways. I want to save this in a format that I can dropbox to friends so they can check it out on their computers. What format should I use for that? And step by step what I do to get that format would be helpful. The options under Publish and Share are many and I don't understand what most of them mean. Thanks.

(If I try what you say and it works, what I have done already is irrelevant.)

When sharing use the Device option and select Computer, then make sure it is set to MP4. You can select SD, either widescreen or not, and then the quality. You may need to export a few samples to see what quality works best with the smallest file size. I would at least start from here and see what kind of results you get. Let us know if this helps :)

Thank you! This is the kind of information I am looking for. Unfortunately, I have a different set up than what you posted. Here are the initial options I have to choose from. Which of the upper group do I choose?

Sorry, those screenshots are from version 14. Try the Computer > AVCHD > MP4 - NTSC DV Widescreen option first, then play with the bitrate settings to improve quality. You can also try the Quicktime H.264/Mp4 option as well.

Thanks, Chuck. I appreciate your help. The learning curve on this thing is steep for those of us over 25.

We did what you said. It still looks the same as the pictures I originally put up on Windows Media Player but it now looks OK on VLC.

My concern is "am I cropping in the correct manner?" In the Windows Media Player part of the screen I thought was gone is still showing up.

I am using the motion section in the applied effects to change the scale and then am adjusting position. I am not using the crop tool. Is this going to work the way I am doing it or do I need to do something different to make sure it works in all formats?

Been playing around with this more. Looks like what you said to do works, Chuck. Not sure why it didn't the first time, but thanks for all your help!

Looks like you got it to work. I am with Sidd on the 2-pass encoding. My bitrate target for 720p is around 8mbs and for 1080p around 15mbs. I do not scale anything past 110%. My DVDs that were shot HD and downsized to SD widescreen look very good on our HD TV. I am curious on what your original file size. Did you shoot in 4K? 1080p?
