That was a new project, but I started over again. Here's what the DV NTDS Widescreen 16:9 looks like. It just stretched the picture that was there. I didn't give me the rest of it.

And there are no effects applied to the clip, like the Crop or Clip effects, correct?

Nothing. The quality is much reduced just by putting it into the program as well.

If I try to do a Force Selected Settings, which do I choose for my video?

Something odd is happening. Your video file is standard definition, your project should be standard definition also. There's something odd going on with the video file too, but let's start with the project settings.

Since you aren't getting a standard definition project, you should definitely start a new project and force the project preset to NTSC DV Widescreen 48khz. Theoretically, that is what your video file should be. How does it look if you drop it into that project?

I'd like to verify the properties of the video file. Download the Gspot utility from http://www.headbands.com/gspot/v26x/GSpot270a.zip. Extract the entire contents of the zip file into a new folder and double click on the gspot.exe file. Drag and drop the video file onto the Gspot window or use the File>Open menu option and select the video file. Please post a screen capture of the GSpot window. Thanks!

Thanks so much for all the help.

I did the force settings like you said. No difference.

Here is the Gspot screen shot as well.

This camera is supposed to be HDD it says, and I had thought that was what we were filming in. There is an obvious, very noticeable difference in quality between the video played on our computer directly and what is imported into Elements.

Here is the gspot cropped and not compressed. We'll see if it uploads sometime before midnight... :)

Thanks, I was having problems reading the other image.

OK, a couple of issues. I had forgotten that the Everio produces .MOD files which are MPEG not AVI. MOD files were handled poorly in earlier versions of Premiere Elements (especially 16:9 widescreen files), but I thought that had been resolved in later versions. I would have expected version 13 should have handled this ok. I'm not familiar with PRE 13's available project presets, perhaps Chuck or Steve can suggest a better choice for the project preset.

The 540x480 frame size in your properties was odd given it was recorded 720x480. But, the GSpot results tells me why. The file contains a sequence extension that specifies 540x480 for the display area. GSpot is also saying the video is 4:3 not 16:9 -- that's probably also the result of the sequence extension. That would explain why you have black bars on the left and right sides of the video in a 16:9 frame. I think the sequence extension and the way Premiere Elements is handling it is at the root of the problem. I think the right side of the image is being truncated as a result.

I'm not sure what you can do about it short of converting the mod file to another format outside of Premiere Elements. In earlier versions (e.g. version 7), you could sometimes get mod files to work by renaming from mod to mpg. But, I don't think that will make a difference in your version. You could give it a try, but I don't think it will make a difference.

Have you been able to use your video files before without problems? If so, is there any difference between how the camera was set for the ones that worked vs these files?

Oh, just an FYI. I noticed you were doing a full screen capture. If you look at the bottom of your lcd screen, next to the start button is an icon that looks like scissors on an oval. That's the Windows snipping tool. If you click on that, you can capture a portion of the screen that you select and can directly save it as a jpg. That should save you some time and effort. Here's some documentation.

We haven't done any video work before. This is our first project. Unfortunately, it is a very large one and we have hours and hours of footage already which cannot be done over.

Is this the loss of quality I am seeing a result of this problem or is that just how things go with video editing in general?

How do we go about changing the file format to one that Elements likes?

Or what other program is there out there that we can use that will work with our current video?

Thanks again for all your help.

PS. Thanks for the tips on the snipping tool. I never use it. Now I may...

Sorry if this has already been asked, but did saddletree ensure that the Project Settings (under the Edit menu) are now set to 720x480 with the .9 pixel aspect ratio. This is clearly a 4:3 video being placed in a 16:9 video project.

Steve, the video was filmed at 16:9 and the program is chopping off the right hand part of it, then giving us black edges. At least this is what I am understanding from Bob's post at 5:42.

I have it set for the 720 x 480. Not sure how to get the .9 pixel ratio. No change in how it looks on the screen. Still missing the right third.

Thanks again for all the help. I really hope you guys can help us figure this out. My husband had a lot of hours into this project already connecting separate audio with this video. I'd hate to see it all go to waste. But we can't redo the filming.

According to the G Spot report above, this is NOT a 16:9 video, saddletree. It's a 4:3 video. which kind of explains everything.

Try opening a new project and force setting the project settings to Hard Disk, Flash Memory Camcorder/Standard 48 khz rather than widescreen. The video should then fill your video frame.

Steve, when he plays the video in Windows Media Player it is definitely widescreen. You can see the screen shot in a earlier post.
