Capturing miniDV to PC

Capturing miniDV to PC

Postby Johnny » Sun Nov 09, 2014 5:44 pm

I've downloaded the recommended WinDV in order to capture miniDV to my PC (and later to import to Premiere Elements 13 since PRE 13 no longer has a capture miniDV option). However, WinDV says, "No video device found." I've checked that the IEEE-1394 connection is working properly and that the driver is up to date. Those things check out, and the computer itself does acknowledge that the camera itself is connected. Still, every time that I try setting up the camera for capture, WindDV does not recognize that it is connected.

Does anyone know what could be the problem? Thank you for any ideas.

Johnny, go back into the device manager and verify which 1394 driver is being used in your system. Windows 7 provides two drivers: "1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller" and "1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)". The non-legacy driver is the default. You most likely need the legacy driver.

The default driver uses a new driver model and supports newer 1394 features. Unfortunately, older software that hasn't been modified to account for changes in how the driver works will have problems with it. Depending on the software, you could have problems connecting to the device, slow data transfer rates, or intermittent connection and dropouts. Switching to the legacy driver usually resolves these issues. If you are using the default driver, try switching to the legacy driver and see if that resolves the problems.

I agree with Bob. Your problems should go away if you set IEEE-1394 to use the Legacy driver.
