Macro Lens fun with Hummingbirds

Postby sidd finch » Sun Sep 01, 2019 6:12 pm

It has been so hot the last couple of weeks that our Hummingbird friends have been enjoying the bird feeder a lot lately. This is always good for video. Today I thought I would not slow down the video so you can see what they look like at full speed. They were hungry. Glad I filled up the feeder yesterday.

Very NICE, Sidd! I wish I had your imagination and energy when it comes to subject matter and camera placement!

Thank you Steve, for me it a fun way to check out trying to use different lenses and different angles to see how close I can get to them.

I am not a scientist, but I did notice that the females (no color on their heads) spent a lot longer feeding than the males (ruby colored head). The males also seemed more agitated that I covered all the feeding holes except the one in front of the camera. I also did not realize how many different birds were feeding at the feeder.

But glad you enjoyed watching.

Always love a good hummingbird video Sidd, thanks ! Do you know what kind of hummers they are? We only have a few varieties here, mostly Ruby Throated and Rufus. I have two feeders and there is always one hummer that owns them both, the owner changes during the daily hummer wars. They are so much fun to watch.

Thank you Chuck. We mostly have the variety called Anna's hummingbird. The male has a ruby colored head and the female has a ruby colored throat.

Here is a still image I took from the video. It is a female Anna's Hummingbird

It is funny you mention that Chuck. There have been some epic battles for feeder supremacy. But I am impressed that the females are always able to get in drink and get away without much of a fight. The males have these really cool air wars.

I have been trying to figure out a way to capture one of the battles but they are so fast and the more around in so much air space I don't think I can even come close.

It wouldn't be easy, probably need 3 or 4 cameras to capture it well and even then it would be hard. They are fun to watch though. I have seen 4 birds all feeding at the same time, usually all females or 1 male and multiple females, but most of the time they battle for supremacy.

I did a YouTube search on fighting hummingbirds and of course National Geographic had a video of aerial hummingbirds fighting with macro lens in slow motion........ I need to apply at National Geographic... :hyst:
