Are camera subscriptions next?

Postby sidd finch » Wed Aug 07, 2019 2:03 pm

Looks like video editing software might not be the only thing to transition to a subscription based system. There is speculation that GoPro might transition to a subscription based model. Please say it isn't so. :(

The logical progression is to begin offering GoPro cameras with subscriptions. $20 to $30 per month for a camera and unlimited cloud storage could be compelling to customers, especially if you get an upgrade every year.

Interesting concept.

Maybe in the future we won't own anything. We'll just lease it.

I think the business model trend is very interesting. It sure makes for a nice revenue stream that a company can look forward to as long as they stay relevant. But I am not so sure I really want to rent. Ehhh gads am I becoming Mr off the Grid... lol

I also wonder what happens to all the old cameras that are exchanged for the newest model. Seems like an incredible amount of waste that the company will have to deal with in terms of disposal or recycle....

Even the movie theaters are offering subscriptions now:

AMC Theaters has something similar. The call it their A List, and for $19.95 a month you can see up to three movies a week.

These types of arrangements drive obsessives like me crazy. I go crazy trying to make sure I get my money's worth.

In fact, I had to stop going to those all-you-can-eat buffets.
