Brushless Gimbal Test

Postby sidd finch » Mon Jun 22, 2015 4:16 pm

I tried out a handheld brushless gimbal system over the weekend to see how well it worked while walking around. I went out to the backyard and walked around some various Rose bushes. I tried it out going high then walking down low. The brushless stabilizer worked pretty well except that it still picks up the walking motion in the video. It is pretty slight but noticable. I did not use any additional stabilization.

Sidd, I like it. I think that footage is very good, especially since that was the first time you used it. I thought the footage was quite smooth, and I didn't really notice any vibrations. Lot better quality than I got from my SteadyTracker!!

Which one did you use? Pilot fly? Other?

Yes, very good. If you're looking for perfection this may not be it, but I think it's some great footage and the results speak for themselves.

Thank you.

I think the footage is usable but I did not realize there was that much up and down movement in walking. I was trying to walk carefully considering it was on grass.

The gimbal was a Feiyu G3 Handheld Gimbal 2 axis with their Ultra Reach Carbon Fiber Extension Pole. I was surprised at how easy they are to use. The gimbal comes with an aluminum fastener to secure the camera over the lens. But I used a rubber band instead because I like to keep the protective lens on the camera so the lens does not get scratched.

I guess the newer 3 axis mounts might correct for the walking movement, but this one did a pretty good job. I did try the warp stabilizer in PPro and the result was butter smooth.

Without the gimbal you would have to do a lot more stabilizing, this is great !!

That was really good. I didn't see any up and down movement, maybe on a larger screen I might.

I could use one of those for a video camera the size of an iPhone. Amazon has some models, but I can afford only the fiber extension pole right now.

It was pretty ugly but I did get a brushless gimbal that was designed for a quad-copter for about $60 and mounted it to a monopod and it worked pretty well. It looks like it could be taken apart and made into a handheld pretty easy. Ugly is the key but it worked really well.

Saw this one on amazon for $30 USD. But you would need to purchase batteries

Wow, your gimbal test is very smooth. I did notice a tad up and down, but if you only use short clips it shouldn't be a problem. Bet it looks even better slowed down. BTW your roses are lovely this year. Your pool closed due to the drought?

I am surprised that the fountain stays on. I am assuming that it is running on reclaimed water as it looks pretty dingy and cloudy.

I really enjoy the roses they are just waves of color. Below is an aerial view of the garden.

Looks very similar to the one we keep at our summer cottage at the lake, except we also put out some sweet corn, cucumbers and 'maters.

You would be amazed at what a little hard work and a good shovel can do. Not using the shovel mind you......ducking as my wife tries to hit me with the shovel.... :ha:
