How do you use your GoPro?

Postby momoffduty » Fri Oct 24, 2014 12:57 pm

I've been using my GoPro as a camera and as a traditional video camera. A few of my uses:

1. Timelapse on a Gorilla Pod with and without the Muvi X-Lapse
2. On a tripod for timelapse static movement
3. On a monopod for capturing video like a traditional cam
4. On a monopod held overhead to capture photos at an event. I had the timer set to about 3 sec intervals. In post deleted about 2/3 of the 450 photos. The event was at the Uni in a gym for a reception and couple of the guys carried it around the crowd. Got some really fun photos and used the Wide setting for the fisheye look.
5. Clamped onto moving objects: a swing, a child's car
6. Upside down on a monopod with a bottle on the opposite end to balance smooth walking. I followed the grandchild around when she was crawling.
7. Taking photos on the timer. I noticed when pushing the button there is too much movement to get a good photo. With the timer I grab about 3 or 4 photos and delete in post.
8. Drivelapses with the camera suction cup mount on the inside of the windshield. I haven't tried placing it on the outside yet. Using the inside of the windshield, the tint of the upper portion of the windshield acts as a lens filter.

What are your uses? :)

Very nice Chris! Thanks for sharing the diving video. Did you use a filter?

I'll put your bike idea on my list to do for next year. That gives me another idea to clamp it to the stroller as a dolly.

For the bike I strapped to the handle bar facing fowards and it was really bumpy - but point it up at her face and it was a nice shot. We were under trees so the background wasn't too bright.

For the diving no filter - though I really should get one. It was at about 30 feet and after we'd had some bad weather so the water was quite cloudy. I had to do some fairly heavy colour correction to bring it back - which I'm still learning. Here's what it looked like before:

I have mounted it to almost everything except an animal. I use it as my main camera today. Like the credit card commercial. Don't leave home without it.

I think half the fun of these cameras is imagining where to place the camera to record great footage. I was at the dentist the other day and while the dentist was checking my teeth I told him how cool it would be to use my GoPro to videotape the event in case he had to drill some fillings....... He just laughed.

No, no, no Sidd! TMI! No video needed. I drove my husband to his dental appt Sat. He had to get a tooth pulled. Well, he came out with 2 small envelopes....one with extra gauze and the other with his tooth. He thought I would want to see it. Guess it is the thought that counts.

This is a GREAT thread! This will generate many good ideas!!

I have used my GoPro (Hero2) as follows:
- on my helmet while riding a dirt bike.
- with suction cup mount on inside of car windshield to record "drivelapse".
- in dive housing for jumping in swimming pool.
- at the end of a telescoping pole to get interesting angles above and below swimming pool surface.
- on a "chesty" mount attached to our boxer, Joey, for angles both above and below (before "Fetch" was released).
- angled, at end of monopod, to get shots of myself while walking around.
- on a monopod, used as "traditional" camcorder, both in and out of water (beach, pool).

I haven't tried it as a camera or for time-lapse yet; I should do that.
Desktop: HPE-580T, i7-950 (3.07GHz), 16GB RAM, Win'7 64-bit Home Premium, PSE12/PRE12, Lightroom 5.
Laptop: MacBook Pro (retina), 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5.
Cameras (in use): Panasonic GH4/Canon HFR400/Canon HV30, GoPro HD Hero2.

I did just purchase a 2 axis brushless gimbal that I am goint to make a DIY hand-held. I was looking at the Pilotfly FunnyGo Handheld but the cost is pretty steep.
